[GEN] Is posting with username similar to another user a bannable offense?

Well, I have a friend that was warned by another user that she posting with a username similar to his was a bannable offense. That user said if she ever logged in under that username ever again then he would alert the moderators, and she'd be permenantly banned from the JC for impersonating another member.

Is this true? BTW, I will mention no names.

 

I don't think it is. I mean that would mean ever last darthkenobi, Mauly, etc would be banned. Sometimes people think up of the same name.

 

Just as long as your friend doesn't claim to be this other user, it should be fine.

I think this falls under the "it's not bannable, but is pretty lame" area.

 

Impersonating a mod via user name is bannable. For instance, creating a user named Kimball-Kinnison would earn the name a ban. But unless you were a serious problem user and this was just the latest in a series of incidents, only that user name would be banned. You would be free to post under another name.

 

If i remember correctly, its only a bannable offense of the subject makes a purposefully similar name to make fun of the original user. If someone makes a name that is similar but they don't claim to be the original user, it shouldn't be a problem.

 

I disguised myself as George Lucas once a long time ago(just as a joke). It was pretty fun, but the name got banned. My other name was not banned however, and people just forgot about it. I've seen people create usernames mirroring a MOD before and they were always banned, and I've also seen two members here that had the same exact name minus a capital letter on one. The original member was pretty agrivated, but I don't think anything was done about it.

 

Pretending somebody else and use the username or sock name,could be an offense. I saw something similar in the Newbie area.

I renember the rules of using old usernames.

 

Like dehrian said, having a similar name isn't necessarily a bannable offense, but creating a name to mock or insult another user would result in that name being banned. You would, however, be able to post under another username. Celebrity impersonation names are also not allowed.

 

What if its just using that persons name for conveince ?

I doubt KK would want the sock, however seeing as he's an admin, he could just take the sock if he wanted Anyways, be careful because giving away passwords is against the rules.

Yes, Wes, it is against the "rules". We don't just "recommend" that you don't make socks mocking another's username and sharing passwords isn't allowed either.

I doubt it would be a problem, otherwise we'd have to ban all the users with "Darth" in their username.

The concern is creating a new username which deliberately resembles a current username with intent to mock or mimmick.
