There are not words for what an unprecedented gesture this is.

This man really is going to go down in human history as one of the most special Artists of the last hundred years.

Still he's a class act and I wholeheartedly approve of focusing on education.

In all seriousness that is really awesome. George is a good man.

Truly amazing. Hopefully this will make it harder for people to jump on the GL-bashing bandwagon. The man is my hero, and he always has been.

whoa. that's pretty unexpected i have to say. didn't know about the giving pledge thing, but that's pretty awesome of him i have to say.

Wow. I knew he was a good egg. He consistently makes me proud to be a fan.

Good on him. I know we sometimes disagree with the little things he does here and there, but on the whole, George has always seemed like a thoroughly decent and thoughtful fellow. What's not to love here? More Star Wars films and the majority of most of the money made going onto charity.

As a Human Being and also as an American I think it only logical that President Obama should publicly give this gesture recognition in the form of an official statement or speech honoring Lucas as an example of outstanding generosity.

...And something tells me Mr. President will be happy to do it as well....

What charities/causes will this go to?

1. Wow. That's really quite commendable.

2. James Cameron has just been pwnd.

3. Is Lucas dying or something? First he announces his retirement from film....then he sells Lucasfilm to a company that he knows will continue the franchise going in a positive direction....and now he's giving away four billion dollars.
It reminds me of what my great grandfather did when he found out he was dying....he started getting everything in order, making sure all his business was wrapped up so that nobody else would have to worry about it after he was gone.

EDIT -- Perhaps he is contemplating suicide? After all, we SW fans raked him over the coals with the prequels and the constant revisions to the original trilogy, plus the box office dud that was "Red Tails"....

Yeah. The man has a gravy train shipping in money. He doesn't need the proceeds of the sale. He can give the money away and still have more than most small countries.

This gesture is perhaps the largest event in American Philanthropic history.

The thing is, no billionaire needs their money. So it's always nice to see some of them actually give it away.

Just for all the action figures and toys I have bought since 1977 you'd think he could have at least swung a few bucks to my yacht fund but noooooo.

Lucas is a huge benefactor for USC's film school (where I'm a grad student) — he's given hundreds of millions, and that has not only given the school some of the best resources imaginable, but also formed a culture of alumni giving that boosts donations even more. Thanks George.
