Alright, so I've actually started watching the Harry Potter series.

It's quite alright, decent light-hearted fun. Seems fitting for the cold holiday season. But I do have to admit, three movies in and... well, Hermoine is the real hero in these movies haha. Potter kind of just seems to stumble through various crazy deadly situations, usually getting saved by someone else's timely arrival, just to in the end "win the day" by the sheer default status of being "The One". Ron... I don't really know what he does But Hermione saves their asses more often than not, so far, and not only that but she actually knows things, studies, is dedicated and hard working, coming from a completely non-magic background manages to become one of the most powerful witches around - from what is shown up to now, even more powerful and resourceful than Harry. She manages to know and achieve pretty much everything as far as studies are concerned, while at the same time bending the rules and still being a sort of renegade. She's the real hero here, as far as I can see after just three movies haha.

 

Ron was completely ruined in the movies............ Such a shame.

I think the movies improve as they go along for the most part. I'm not much of a fan of the first three.

 

The problem is the same as when you turn any book into a movie, no matter how good(or bad) it is, it almost never measures up to the original material.It's sort of the opposite to Star Wars where the EU almost never measures up to the movies.

That's so funny, because I just bought the Blu-Rays. As I'm reading through them I watch a film.

I wonder if your assessment has anything to do with the gender of the author?

It seems much too busy to get around these boards these days and I don't visit here as often as I'd like, but I did want to pass on my holiday greetings to each of you.

I've only seen the first two movies so far, but my son and I are now on the sixth book (one more to go). Really enjoying reading them together. We'll catch up on the rest of the movies soon, since we're giving him the DVD set for Christmas. But we also don't want to watch any of the movies before reading their respective books.

Also, those are good points regarding Hermione. She's a great character. Ultimately, though, there are things about Harry that will kind of preclude anyone else from being the real hero. But he definitely couldn't have made it through all those years without her.
