Because it's something that is completely unnecessary and doesn't really fit in with the image of the Elves and the Tolkien lore overall. The "power" in Tolkien is dealt in a much more subtle manner than skateboarding down stairs on a shield or that whole silly elephant killing episode. I hated the fact that they made Legolas the uber-powerful unstoppable perfect beautiful warrior, while everyone else pretty much gets by however they can. It's even worse when compared to Gimli, who they made a stupid comic relief character who can barely get anything right, while Legolas of course, makes Neo from Matrix look like a baby.

To put it in a context familiar to us all, the Star Wars equivalent of what Peter Jackson did to Elves in Tolkien would be if every single Jedi in ST had powers like Starkiller from Force Unleashed - or even stronger.
It's over the top, doesn't really fit in with the overall theme, doesn't really match the lore, doesn't serve any other purpose other than "looking cool" (at least in Jackson's mind, I think) and fulfiling some fan fantasy of uber-elves.

However bitter that may sound, I am looking forward to the new Hobbit movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first one, as well as LOTR. Some things are just not really necessary and I feel were included for some completely silly reason that borders on bad fanfiction.

I am excited for the Hobbit to wrap up, as well. But, for purely self-serving reasons. Mainly, Tintin 2: Prisoners of the Sun.

The first Tintin was a hugely positive surprise. I saw it with no expectations whatsoever, and was rewarded by a great gem. Reminded me very much of Indiana Jones, in the most positive way possible.

I had high hopes as a lifelong fan, but the Indiana Jones vibe was certainly an unexpected surprise.

I'm reminded of a humorous fan fic that floated around in the LOTR trilogy movie days, in which Legolas kept saying "...and I'm still the prettiest."

Same here. I definitely got the Indiana Jones vibe as well. It also had amazing animation. IMO it avoided the Uncanny Valley to the point that I often needed to remind myself this was animated. Daniel Craig needs to more voice work, he was great here, as was Serkis of course.

The Adventures of Tintin was incredibly fun, but I wish I had seen it in theaters.

That was one of the very few times 3D has substantially added to a film. I cannot stress enough how gorgeous it looked. Even still, it looks pretty damn good on DVD as well.

I honestly didn't like what I saw of it. But to be fair I haven't seen the whole movie. My son really liked it from what my wife said.

It had tremendous scope to it. I viewed it 4 times at the cinema and the final time, a kid kept telling his mom that Tintin was watching the movie with them in disguise because I have Tintin hair... but also a closely trimmed beard. :p

To be honest I didn't even know they were making a second one. Hope it lives up to the original, such quality adventure films are rare these days. I'm the first to support the gritty and realistic approach, but from time to time you just need a good, fun, multi-layered adventure flick to relax.

This time, Spielberg and Jackson are swapping out roles. Jackson is now directing with Spielberg producing.

That context isn't familiar to me at all. :p Anyway, the point is taken.

So, Episode VII is going to be released in December of 2015. I don't like this one bit... just delay the film until May of 2016, and hence a niiiiiice Star Wars tradition won't be broken.

I really don't get this fixation with the May release. It may have been a US thing or something, but the folks around the world got it at other dates sometimes.
I don't care for it one bit and it's the least important thing on the list.

In the grand scheme of the ST, yes, this is low on the list. The fixation on May is merely due to how each of the previous films were released in that month, here in the U.S. at least. It's a niiiice, simple tradition in my humble opinion. As I mentioned in another thread, think about how great is on May 4th to see many Star Wars themed posts splashed across social media. That (pun) simply doesn't work in any other month.

Well that can still remain the "Star Wars day" no matter when they release the movies.

Of course... and it would be even the previous films hadn't been released in May. But, I think the May connection adds a bit to that day.

Now the real problem, and Mods are gonna need riot gear for that one, is if they don't give us any info, images, teasers, whatever for May 4th 2014 :p

I was excited for Hobbit last year. But I have to admit I literally felt asleep multiple times during the film. I went with a friend and she had to poke my arm to wake me up. I felt bad because I wanted to enjoy the movie but it felt sooooo slow and showed almost no progress.... I'm still looking forward to the sequel but I'm afraid it will be the same as the first one.

Tintin on the other hand was fantastic. I grew up watching the tv series and wasn't dissappointed by the recent movie.

I had the very same happen to me, though a lot of that was due to the fact that I had worked a 7am-4pm shift at my previous job, and then saw The Hobbit at midnight (at Grauman's Chinese Theater! :D ). Despite its faults, I very much enjoyed it.

It was a fun, but I have to admit, somewhat forgettable movie. I saw it two times but I doubt I'll be watching it again in the next five or so years.
It may be just me getting a bit older, but it didn't have that instant classic appeal that the Lord of the Rings movies had when I saw them for the first time. They still hold the same appeal to me. Hobbit, while being quite fun and enjoyable for what it is, doesn't have the same "classic" feel that LOTR had.
