Hey, not to jump off the subject, but anyone notice how dark Games of Throne has gotten lately? I mean, it has obviously always been that way, no Disney fairy tale; but lately, the last 3 or 4 episodes? Geez.

Haven't watched it but heard about the latest episode, caused a lot of controversy I don't think I'd be able to sit through it honestly

Right, that was actually a couple episodes back, the rape scene. It's been even darker than usual aside from that. They are going outside the books more and more also, that particular rape scene didn't happen in the book, not of that girl anyway.

That's what I heard that it was suppose to happen to someone else but still never something you want to watch be done, but I think that's just the entertainment industry for you they want that shock and wow factor and sometimes you got to deviate from the plan to do it I mean I haven't watched the show and I was honestly kind of interested to see what got everyone so worked up about

Episode 6 featured the rape scene. It's not as if it's the first time there's been a rape scene in GOT, but I think the majority of objections have been due as much to the context as anything else. Plus it was always going to be horrific anyway.

Like most people, I was confident we were going to get badass Sansa this season; early signs were promising... then they gave her the Jeyne Poole storyline from the books. Personally I will reserve judgement on where this is all heading until the end of the season, but I'm pretty confident that there will be some 'payback'.

FTR, episode 8 has a 20 minute battle sequence at the end that was unlike anything I've seen in the show before. I can see where a large chunk of the budget went for season 5. ;)

Wouldn't doubt they always seem to go all out for their fight scenes, at least when I was watching like 3 seasons ago

I can't believe it is already that close! It felt like yesterday that Disney acquired the rights to Lucas Films and announced the movies

I think it was the particular character that was raped that got everyone so worked up- no one actually wanted that to happen to her. It didn't help that Brienne is crucified trying to rescue her after the rape in the next episode, further despair for all of Sansa's adoring fans. The show has been filled with darkness and despair to a high degree even for GOT.

Yeah, that was quite the battle scene; I'm sure we will have more of those on the way though.

Yeah, I've actually stopped watching it, and it was my favorite show. Not sure what the point is anymore.

You stopped watching it because of that scene or just in general?

This whole sequence is going away from the story of the books in a way never done before. Once you have so many changes, it no longer is the same story, and it is basically being written by the makers of the show. Martin alluded to that recently when asked about the story going away from his books, indicating that small changes end up becoming big changes in the overall picture; at this point in season 5, I think saying "small changes" is understating the case.

I haven't given up entirely on the show, but I must admit I am worried about the direction it is going. It seems to be taking the path of the godfather 3, where everyone is miserable or dead, and that is all there is left to the story. I like dark tales and such, but there has to be a point to it all. Making Sansa this helpless victim of ongoing rape and domestic violence? I don't know about that decision.

I still love the show and still watch it. As far as I'm concerned, this show has always dealt with dark themes, and likely "The Winds of Winter" will be the darkest yet. The dark themes are a large part of what the show is about. TBH, I thought the worst thing about that episode was the crap fight scene in Dorne. That was a surprise, because normally the fight choreography is excellent, so I don't know what went on there. Maybe the second unit in Spain had issues that need to be addressed, as a lot of the Dorne stuff is pretty flat. That aside, I still think this is an excellent show.

The show moving away from the books was always going to happen. George is a notoriously slow writer and doesn't seem to know how to say 'no' often enough when asked to do talks, conferences, book signings, conventions, talk shows, and other written material. Whilst I don't ever think he should rush his material, I think it's reasonable to say that the show runners would have had one more book to work from by now, had he focussed all his energy on that.

At least we are told that the show and the books will have the same ending, but will take a different route to get there. The downside of that of course being that we will have a pretty good idea of how the books will end, as you can be sure that the show will finish long before A Dream of Spring is published.

I've stopped watching it for a few reasons, but that scene was the final straw for me. Basically, the bad outweighs the good to such a degree that I'm no longer enjoying the show. More often than not, I'm upset at the end of an episode, and I've gotten tired of that. It's weird because, before this season, I thought I had a near limitless threshold for that kind of thing. Also, the show has gotten predictable. I predicted the scene in question several episodes before it happened. I even told my friends that if it played out that way then I was done.

I feel you, once you're able to determine the outcome every episode, no matter how much you may love it, there's is just no way to keep up with it because it had lost all the surprises that you had once loved, obviously if you read the books you may have some kind of idea what might happen but, like you guys keep saying, the show is basically on its own at this point. They are taking it in a direction of their own and using the clichés that they know best will bring in an audience that is willing to watch it

Yeah, and like Lee_ said, nobody wanted to see that happen to that character. She's already narrowly avoided rape a couple of times before, and was probably the closest thing this show has to an innocent. She's also already been victimized at the hands of a sadist for several seasons, so the audience has already been through this with her. After all that, and the fact that they've practically made her virginity a plot point, it was just one bit of torture porn too many.

Hang on a second, that isn't fair. I don't watch it because I'm sucked in by clichés. This show has fewer of those than many. If anything, there are more surprises rather than fewer as they are diverging from the books, so it can become harder to predict what happens. I've watched it since the very beginning, and I know why so many people love the show and why I love it. I shouldn't have to justify what shows I watch; it isn't real life.

For me it has great production values, mostly great acting and many compelling sub-plots. If others have gotten bored or upset with the show, that's fine. I lost interest in Doctor Who for that reason, but have become hooked again with Peter Capaldi's doctor. Each to their own, and with DW as with GOT or any show for that matter, you need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it.
