If I read one more complaint about GL's directing, storytelling, plot or anything else I'm gonna put my head through the wall!!! So you didn't like the prequels, boohoo, there are millions that did. Star Wars is GL's baby and he can do with it whatever the hell he wants! For all you moaners, if you had the sublime imagination and talent to come with a story as captivating as the Star Wars saga then you could decide what to do with it. Until then, stop picking "faults" in what Lucas does. For God's sake, no movie is perfect, and very few movies get scrutinized as intensely as Star Wars so just accept it. All that matters is that Lucas is telling the story how he wants and providing millions and millions with an escape from reality and magnificent entertainment.

    Long live GL!!!!

I don't think imagination will get it anymore... Plently of people have imagination, and great talent. Its getting it off the ground thats hard... getting people to listen, and take part of. Because, really, what else can be done to impress people? Star Wars was so huge because noone had ever done anything like it before... Sure there were Sci-Fi movies... but nothing so complex as Lucas' creation. Now we've had everything from Killer Clowns to Man-Eating Blobs... imagination is one thing, but when you've seen it all... heh. I do agree however, I hate hearing people gripe over the Star Wars creators work. I mean...if I created something I'd expect to do what I wanted with it too... its his creation afterall.

I think 'sw3theholidayspecial' has a nice signature about it:

"In 1977 George Lucas made Star Wars and the people were happy.
In 1983 George Lucas ended Star Wars.
The people begged George Lucas for more Star Wars.
In 1999 George Lucas gave the people what they said they wanted.
    Then the people complained."

There's lot of truth in it... [face_plain]

Its a good thing you weren't around here for the TPM opening. This is nothing.

Yes some people do take knocking SW and GL to a silly extreme especially as we are all supposed to be fans here but that does not mean the GL should be not be criticised.

Although i did enjoy AOTC i thought that the directing and editing were poor. I am not going to lie and say I think they were great just because it was SW.

On the other hand I do a agree that SW is held to far higher standards than most movies but that is the price of the OT being so good.

GL should not be above criticism and treated differently than any other mortal filmmaker. Increased scrutiny is a byproduct of a modern mass media society. It's not necessarily a phenomenon exclusive to Star Wars although the OT shadow does play a strong part. GL seems to understand this but it doesn't seem to really bother him. Now if you want to complain about Connie Chung and her "entertainment reporting" on AOTC, you'd have a strong case.

I think GL does get treated differently, he is criticised more than any other filmmaker. And by his own fans.

Good point but on the flipside of the coin are fans who elevate GL as "some sort of god" (ROTJ: Threepio was filling in as GL and the Ewoks represent said fans) who can do no wrong. Between those extremes must be some kind of healthy balance.

That's the price you pay for creating something as big as SW. With as many SW fans as there are you will always get some who want things done differently.

Well its not just fans, go read some reviews of the prequels and they all critise Lucas very unfairly. I dont see people making petitions for Peter Jackson or something to direct Indy 4, just because the majority didnt like AI as much. Did they ask for someone else to direct Last Crusade because Temple of Doom wasnt as good as the first? I doubt it, but thats the sort of thing people direct to Lucas.

I had a sinking feeling about 1/4 of the way into AOTC, first time I saw it (bearing in mind all of the neg reviews) that I was deceiving myself ... (though I had enjoyed the beginning)... THEN I saw Anakin with Watto, Anakin with Owen, Anakin with Shmi and Anakin with the Tuskens (not to mention love pledge, Obi in the binders, the Jedi bit.. and .. I could go on forever). I was totally, utterly captured by the story and these characters about whom I really, really cared (as much as I did about Luke and Han and Leia, when I was younger and didn't realise that they weren't real). I respect George Lucas' vision and am grateful that he decided to make the prequels - I'd wouldv'e had to resort to watching "Ewok" cartoons to get a Star Wars fix otherwise (I'm allergic to the EU).

In all honesty though, what I didn't like after TPM was the somewhat cynical marketing - after the second "Special Edition" video came out (with ONE two minute "episode II preview") attached to it, I decided to boycott the marketing. I did not like the blanket commercialism of TPM and resolved not to get sucked in this time round. Ironically, given the low profile AOTC got this time round, it turns out that I didn't need to.

    My two cents anyway [face_plain]

I have already said that SW is held to a higher standard than other movies. It is not fair but it is not going to change so you had better get used to it. The same thing will happen when Ep3 is released. What you have to remember is that the media only build people (Sports stars, actors, pop stars, etc) up so that they can knock them down. Its the way of the world and is not going to change.

However the fans do have a legitimate right to criticise. We pay good money to see the movies, buy them on video and buy alsorts of merchendise so we all entitled to our opinions.

In terms of mass media, it is funny how Spielberg seems to escape scathing criticism even though A.I. had one of the worst endings that I've seen in recent memory and MR has been getting mixed reviews. Maybe his diverse portfolio that has also garnered some Oscars gives him more room to make a few duds.

Spielberg does get an easy ride from the media which annoys me because I think he is extremely overated.

People are not bashing him, they are telling their opinions. I've not heard one complaint. And don't try to change people by making threads like this.

Bravo. It's his story. And he's right when he says that he should tell it the way he wants it. How many authors out there poll the audience and make sure they make everyone happy before writing a novel? None, they do it the way they want to.

I don't think anybody would really argue with that. But once you put out a film or novel for public consumption, you must realize that it is now open to public opinion, both positive and negative.

Yeah but there is a difference between positive and negative, and just plain stupid opinions, an example of which you've already said:

Connie Chung and her "entertainment reporting" on AOTC

I havent seen another director get that kind of treatment before.

It'll only get worse for Ep. III
We all have our own idea on how the movie should be. For some it wont fulfill their high expectations because they'll have hyped "THEMSELVES" up so much that anything less than an OSCAR performance will make the movie crap. Then you have to throw in the OT nostalgia from the last thread and no matter how good the next movie will be some people will not be satisfied.
The next movie could start with Anakin as Vader killing every jedi that we ever saw and people will gripe about how too violent it was.
I say sit back pop some popcorn and enjoy the next one, and avoid spoiler threads so you get your monies worth when you watch it on the big screen in 2005.
If you cant enjoy it cuz the prequels havent met your standards then go get you wallet break out a hundred million bucks and make your own movie which we can all criticize.

    SLAVE2,

I didn't see the actual interviews. I did read some excerpts though. I think she interviewed GL and some of the actors. Based on what I read, it really had nothing to do with the film. It sounded like somebody forgot to tell her that she's interviewing GL and some actors, not Gary Condit. I agree that it went way beyond expressing an opinion and was very unprofessional.

EDIT: Why do we need mods? I don't see a massive flame war erupting anytime soon which is actually kind of surprising given the title of the thread.

The reason that all of our expectations are so high is because with the OT Lucas exceeded everyone's expectations of what could be done in movies. We all just expect Lucas to live up to the standards that he has set HIMSELF. When we see things below the standards of what came before, naturally we complain.

"People are not bashing him, they are telling their opinions. I've not heard one complaint"

You obviously don't hang out in this forum much. :)
Things actually seem to have gotten worse in the last few weeks. I think there's a new wave of Lucas haters showing up who were probably too afraid to post here back in May, when everyone was praising the film. Yes, they are entitled to their opinions, but they are not entitled to tell fans we are wrong and "less educated" for enjoying AOTC. I get the feeling nothing Lucas has done since 1983 can possibly please these people. It's their loss, IMO.

This is still nothing compared to the TPM forum back around this time, when gushers were hunted down Planet of the Apes-style by roving bands of bashers.

The only thing I can think of is that a lot of people on here now are just trolls. They probably haven't even seen the film. They are just here to cause havoc and chaos. When seen from that perspective, they're kinda funny.

Anyway, I literally can't believe the positive response AOTC has gotten from most of the fans. I thought nothing would win them back. But it was a genuine gusher fest here back in May.

As for the everyone has a right to an opinion argument, well, I'll just say it's one thing not to like SW because you don't like it, but another thing not to like it simply because you have no idea what you're looking at.

Many fans who don't like AOTC and endlessly complain about people reading too much into it wouldn't know Joe Campbell from Bazooka Joe.
