Here is a bit of speculation on where the GFFA saga is heading.

The Galactic Republic is a defeated idea.
The common sentient must live by Vong standards.

The common sentient must never use technology. Thus technology becomes a fixture of sentimental nostalgia and if found in possession of you are in deep poodoo. So the passing of lightsabers to offspring becomes a form of protest.

The resistance movement created by our heroes keeps a low profile. It may even be a nice touch of irony if this resistance movement calls itself the Second CONFEDERACY of Independent Systems (tie in to Episode 2's Confederacy).

Those who live by Vong rule and do not resist come to see technology dependence as the reason for their defeat in the first place. In other words those who subscribe to this apologetic view say, 'We had it coming'.

These are SOME of the kinds of conditions Ben Skywalker grows up under.
Until one day he takes up his grandfather's forbidden lasersword against those who rule from Coruscant-Remade-In-The-Image-Of-The-Great-Vong-Gods (traslated from Vong name).

Some of our heroes will early on decide to create an Outbound Flight II project. The goal will be to find the Vong home galaxy and ally if possible with the enemy the Vong escaped there. This mission and others like it into the future suggest where we are in the scheme of Lucas's GFFA saga. Thus shades of Battlestar Galactica rise forth.
