Amph Don't Cross The Streams! The Ghostbusters Franchise (Afterlife, Frozen Empire)

Non-comic-book-based superheroes, absolutely! They wear distinctive uniforms and drive a distinctive car with a colorful symbol identifying them as part of a unique heroic team; they use special science-y equipment no one else knows how to operate; they fight paranormal powers; they save NYC. Twice. Superheroes.

 

We all came to an agreement that they are not superheroes because they get paid for their services.

 

They're scientists.

 

They're pest controllers.

 

Power Man and Iron Fist get paid for their services ("Heroes for Hire") as does Jessica Jones. No one disputes that they're superheroes.

Captain Steel appeared in a couple of episodes where he came into the real world.

 

Ugh, this reboot is looking more and more terrible. It's not even the all-female cast (which I wouldn't be against anyway) but it reeks of another unnecessary reboot.

 

Y'know how there's a Robocop remake nobody cares about and a Total Recall remake nobody cares about? Yeah, that.

 

is there a trailer out for it yet? or is this a reboot like the turtles that look like they were on steroids?

 

No trailer yet and it started filming fairly recently.

 

I was very against both of those. I have seen the TR one (and was validated). Robocop sits on my DVR for me to evaluate.

 

Didn't see the TR remake but RoboCop while not bad was pretty forgettable. Goes to show why some movies need to be left alone.

 

Is is even a reboot? Isn't it set in the same "universe" as the original films? I.e. more of a sequel, than anything.

 

Doesn't sound like it since Ackroyd is making a cameo as a cab driver.

 

The only reason I'm probably not going to see this Ghostbusters is because Melissa McCarthy is in it. I generally avoid movies where she stars (St. Vincent being the exception and she didn't play her usual type of movie character).

 

I actually will admit I didn't hate the Robocop and Total Recall remakes but I don't care and nobody else seems to care and "mostly entertaining in fits and spurts but overall entirely forgettable and nowhere near the classics" seems to be as good as this Ghostbusters can aspire to.

See if this was sent in the same universe as Ghostbusters, a decades later sequel with this crew taking up the mantle, I would actually be way, way, way more open to it. But, despite all the corporate / studio / director-talk speak it's going to be a remake. Names changed to protect the innocent but, yes, remake. For these "Ghostbusters", the original "Ghostbusters" never happened (which is really weird considering there's a cameo by a main castmember of the original but he's not the original Ray). which puts it in the "Robocop" / "Total Recall" remake side of the column.

 

Oh, right. For some reason I thought it was like Vacation and a sort of remake/sequel thing.

 

Nah. Vacation is actually trying by getting cameo appearances by Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo as Clark and Ellen.

Still wish they would have brought back Anthony Michael Hall though.
