Maybe we can convince all the religious fundamentalists that Mars is the true "Promised Land"...

This seems like a half assed Kickstarter. They have some big names there, like Space-X. This requires a perfect storm of safety. Look at the medical items. It all but says you are own your own be carefull unless you need CPR then we can handle that. I truly hope this succeeds and it opens up a floodgate for further space exploration. But this doesn't look like it will get much further.

    Over 100,000 applicants

2022 to land in 2023. Elan Musk says he might be off to Mars around that time if he gets a heavy lift version of the falcon launcher going.

But if we get to mars then other space exploration will happen*.

    * assuming of course Mars unlocks magical unicorn space travel

This whole Mars One thing has been a bunch of BS. And it hurts the image of the real scientific community trying to get actual legit Mars projects off the ground, because all people see in the headlines is "Mars One" this-and-that, but not the many smaller projects that actually have a shot at accomplishing something, even if it isn't as glorious as setting up a Martian community this decade.

Students I work with ask me about this all the time, especially if they are doing projects on the solar system.

My standard answer has been, I am guessing we will get to Mars in your lifetime, although maybe not in mine.

And I plan to still be alive and kicking ass in 2023.

It's funny how surprised they are that it takes a good six months to get to Mars though. Ah, distances in space.

    http://time.com/4014856/buzz-aldrin-colonize-mars-2040/

I guess Mars talk will keep heating up ahead of the new Matt Damon movie.

There are so many reasons why no one will ever set foot on Mars, let alone colonize it.

    1. the cost of lobbing enough stuff into orbit for the journey, including food, water, people, supplies, fuel for the round trip, fuel to get to the surface, fuel to get off the surface back into Mars orbit
    2. Radiation
    3. other health consequences of being in space/zero g for long periods of time.

As we approach the half century point for not having left near earth orbit, please note that not even going back to the moon gets anyone very excited. We reached the peak of manned space exploration in 1972, and it will remain the high water mark for the remainder of our existence as a species.

The first flight of the Orion Program is scheduled for 2018 and is slated to be a unmanned Lunar fly-by mission. [face_whistling]

Your right. Everything sucks and nothing is ever going to get better, so we should all buy guns, shoot ourselves in the head and let the next race take over.

No that pretty much is what you wrote. Don't try to claim that you meant something else when your meaning was pretty obvious.

You wanna explain where "everyone should buy guns and kill themselves" is? I know your understanding of physics is...creative, but I didn't realize it bled into reading comprehension.

The Moon as the practical limit of manned space travel does not mean we should all kill ourselves. I didn't write that nor can it be implied from what I wrote or at least not from what I wrote in this particular thread.

Ewok just doesn't like it when people don't validate his vision of a B-list movie scifi future.

This Mars One thing has been all but utterly trashed. My memory is failing me, either the leading Mars page on facebook banned it as a topic or the leading SpaceX page did.
