I enjoyed the humour at the start, but they bungled the more serious stuff. But with Yost in the mix I'm not surprised, and I'm sure the next one will have the same problem. They should have stuck closer to the Simonson story-arcs.

The Dark World is one of those films that's entertaining at first, but upon closer inspection you realize the serious flaws it has. Too much humor, pointless characters, wasted villain, etc.

I think The Dark World would have been a better film than the original had they developed the main villain to a level near that of Loki. Lacking that, the areas it excels in (better action, scope, stakes and character usage) get overshadowed.

I think they went with Mr Superserious Malekith because in the comics he is too much like Loki. But I think maybe they should have gone with it as Malekith and Loki exchanging barbs with loki and smarting off to Thor would have been good. Still, i like both Thor movies despite a weakness or two.

Me too, but they're making Thor comedic rather than epic. Why make a Thor movie if your not going to go with what works?

I am hoping the humor doesn't bog this next Thor down too much. Asgardian humor I am fine with, the earth bound stuff, not so much.

I'm glad most of the film won't be happening on Earth. That's an improvement right there.

No Darcy. No Jane. And I assume no Selvig. So no worries on earthbound humor.

there's probably a tumblr somewhere that specializes in gifs of actors realizing they've made a terrible mistake by agreeing to appear in a superhero film

Well yes my premise assumes some level of self-respect is involved

It's akin to Alec Guinness resenting a supporting role in a space opera overshadowing the rest of a storied and often serious career

It depends on the actor really. It seems like the stigma of appearing in genre films has lessened a lot since Sir Alec's time though. Heck they got Robert freaking Redford, who pretty much never does these kinds of big blockbuster films, to appear in a CBM (and give a really good performance to boot).

Then you have a guy like Oscar Isaac, one of the most respected actors around, who WANTED to be in a SW film.

As for TDW, it wasn't terrible imo. It was just aggressively mediocre. The weakest MCU film thus far for me, it's just kind of there.

The thing with Guinness was that he wasn't used to the idea of a fandom. A lot of actors in his era weren't. That's why Shanter and Nimoy were resentful of their iconic roles for about ten years or so, before they got over it and embraced it. Guinness couldn't bring himself to do that. Someone like Oscar Issac grew up loving the films and that's why he was adamant about trying to land a role. Redford just happened to adapt to the idea and was encouraged by his grandchildren. And whereas he was never interested in playing Superman, playing a senator who was a terrorist leader and didn't have to dress up in a costume, worked out nicely for him.

You can have self-respect and still appear in a comic book film.
