He’d been many things to her over their thirty-plus years together. Annoyance. Friend. Lover. Husband. Father of her child. But, now, as she stood alone; finally alone after a long day of meetings and planning, she could let herself miss him. Miss her friend. She could begin to say goodbye.

    “I like nice men.”

    “I’m a nice man.”

Oh we never know where life will take us
I know it's just a ride on the wheel
And we never know when death will shake us
And we wonder how it will feel

    So goodbye my friend
I know I'll never see you again
But the time together through all the years
    Will take away these tears
    It's okay now
    Goodbye my friend

A few tears gathered in her eyes as she recalled their time together on Cloud City, before everything went crazy. The tender touch of his hands. The soft embrace of his arms.

    “I don’t trust Lando.”

“Well, I don’t trust him either, but he is my friend.”

Leia smirked a bit just as their lips touched. Her arms snaked around his neck as his pulled her close to him.

I've seen a lot things that make me crazy
And I guess I held on to you
We could've run away and left well maybe
But it wasn't time and we both knew

Those tears fell as her memories turned to their wedding. A wonderful day spent in the company of friends and family. The birth of their son, Ben. The tenderness she’s seen in Han as he held their tiny boy in his strong arms. The gentleness with which he kissed them both.

    “He’s so small and fragile.”

“He’ll get taller and stronger, like his father.”

She recalled the days when everything was right between them when the days held nothing but hope and promise.

“Mama! Papa! Watch me!” young Ben called to his parents as he levitated a small rock in front of his uncle.

“I love you,” she heard herself whisper.

“I know,” he returned with a grin.

    So goodbye my friend
I know I'll never see you again
But the love you gave me through all the years
    Will take away these tears
    I'm okay now
    Goodbye my friend

“There was just too much Vader in him.”

“Bring our son home, Han,” Leia begged. “I want him back.”

He pulled her into his arms as he’d done so many times over the years. He held her as close as two people could be without becoming one.

“I’ll bring him back. One way or another.”

Life's so fragile and love's so pure
We can't hold on but we try
We watch how quickly it disappears
    And we never know why

    But I'm okay now
    Goodbye my friend
    You can go now
    Goodbye my friend

Sobs overtook her as the memory of Han walking away, one last time came to her minds’ eye.

“Goodbye, my friend,” she whispered to herself. “I love you.”

“I know,” came the reply, carried on the breeze she felt on her cheek.

So sad, and so touching! They are always going to be together in their hearts, even if the physical world separates them.

Enjoyed this very poignant little tribute, which fits so beautifully with the way Han and Leia interacted in TFA—even though they had been apart, for one reason and another, there was still warmth and love between them, as well as a newfound unity of purpose concerning their son. And of course it brings to mind that beautiful shot of their hug outside the Resistance base, which was my favorite image from the trailer. Nice job! :)
