As a film school graduate I know that for a really great movie you need great explosions. Here is my list of great explosions in film history

    Death Star explosion in ANH
Shield Generator and Death Star II in ROTJ
    Droid Control Ship in TPM
    The seismic charges in AOTC

    LV-426 in Aliens

The convenience store in Gross Point Blank

The Moloch machine in Metropolis (1927)
    The Ziggurat in Metropolis (2001)

The guy who exploded in Big Trouble in Little China

Those two semi trucks in Matrix Reloaded

that building in Lethal Weapon III

    Liam Neeson's lab in Darkman

    The head explosion in Scanners

Shoot, I know there are alot more. This will get updated

    Ok. Here's a couple more:

The beach house explosion at the end of "Kiss Me Deadly"

The boomerang-shaped airplane in "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

The White House in "Independence Day"

    Wolverine's camper in "X-men"

The front of the tenement building where Jake and Elwood live in "Blues Brothers"

Bartelby's head and chest blowing up in "Dogma"

All of Tokyo going up in flames at the end of "Godzilla 2000" (I know it's not technically an explosion, but there's so much fire and it's so beautiful!)

The whole ship blowing up at the end of "Deep Rising"

The roof of Nokatomi Plaza in "Die Hard"

James Cagney and the oil tank blowing up at the end of "White Heat"

Los Angeles getting nuked in "Terminator 2"

The end of "Ghostbusters" (Everything gets covered in marshmallows! If that ain't a great explosion, what is?)

    Who else has examples?

    Great explosions?
Ok, now we're just getting silly. Of course, sense I seem to spend a lot of my time being silly, here's my list.

The phone booth with Jake and Elwood in it, after Carrie Fisher shoots it with a flamethrower (or is that more of a launch)

Every one of those seismic (or is it sonic?) charges blowing up in Attack of the Clones

The Martians' heads in Mars Attacks

    Axis Chemicals in Batman

    The Sarlacc pit in Reepo

The Klingon moon Praxis in Star Trek VI
    (it breaks Sulu's coffee mug)

The frakulator going off in Mystery Men (ok, that's not really an explosion, it's a frakulation)

Anytime Crazy Harry's on screen in a Muppet Movie

It's a Wonderful Life, where George sneaks into Mr. Potter's building and plants the plastic explosive under Potter's desk and the whole building blows up when Potter wheels his wheelchair up. (Oh wait, there wasn't a scene like that, but maybe there should've been)

    And just for fun,
here's a list of important train crashes

    Bridge on the River Kwai
The General (that's an old Buster Keaton film)

    Back to the Future III

    Shanghai Noon (Deleted scene)

and for car crashes, just watch the Blues Brothers Movies
