There are great musical moments in great films. Which stand out as the greatest in history? Discuss.

Here are some of my favorites (Track names aren't listed, they are sorted by how they appear in film)...

    - Binary Sunset, Opening and Finale of all the Star Wars movies (duh)

    - Ending sequence in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

    - Opening sequence in Gone With the Wind

    - Helicopter Ride to Jurassic Park

    - Finale of Dragonheart

    - Flying on Bicycles and Finale of E.T.

    - Gandalf riding up Minas Tirith, Lighting of the Beacons, and End Sequences of LOTR: TROTK

    - the Fellowship heading south, to the Bridge of Khazad Dum, and Intro to the Shire in LOTR: TFOTR

    - Lawrence on top of the train in Lawrence of Arabia

    - Dr. Zhivago opening titles

    - opening and finale of the Sound of Music

I know I enjoy many more, but I can't think of them now.

    Lighting of the Beacons/Rohan Mustering

Can't leave out the Moth theme there![face_shame_on_you]

    :D

The Colonel Alone, from The Big Country (if you've seen the film, you should know what scene this is, if you haven't seen it, shame on you!)

Christ giving Ben-Hur water and the transition from him walking off to the galleys....wow, just wow...

    The Map Room: Dawn

I could be at this all night....[face_dancing]

From The Godfather, I'd say the Love Theme that plays when Michael is in Sicily, and the organ music during the baptism scene.

And from the late Jerry Goldsmith, "The Enterprise" as the Kirk gets his first look at the new ship in ST:TMP, and from Patton I love "The Battle Ground" with the trumpets and percussion as Patton surveys and waxes poetic.

"Lupin's Transformation" from the Prisoner of Azkaban movie.

As well as Hedwig's Theme, also from the HP movies.

    - the Map Room: Dawn is great in Raiders

    - Hedwig's Theme when kids in boats going to Hogwarts in Sorcerer's Stone

I haven't seen The Godfather and Platoon so I don't know any good musical moments during them.

Well, actually I said Patton (1970), but now that you mention it, the use of Barber's Adagio For Strings in Platoon (1986) was awesome.

A few more moments of note:

    - From Apocalypse Now, the helicopter attack when Col. Kilgore plays Wagner's "Ride Of The Valkyries".

    - From 2001: A Space Odyssey, the "Dawn Of Man", using Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra, and of course, the space station orbital scene playing Johann Strauss' The Blue Danube (just sublime :)).

I'd like to add the sequence when Indy runs from the Hovitos and jumps in the river to board the plane. It's the first time we hear the Raider's march.

    I agree.
Binary Sunset is perhaps the greatest musical moment I have seen in a film.

    Thirded.

Another Godfather music moment I liked was for the ending outside the Opera house in The Godfather Part III - easily the best scene of the entire movie with Mascagni; Cavalleria Rusticana playing. In addition, the use of Cavelleria Rusticana in Raging Bull is also memorable. Other greatest moments have already been mentioned in this thread, the only one I can really think to contribute is the use of the Zither in The Third Man.

    And like that...he's gone.

One of my favourite moments is in The Great Dictator when Hynkyl was left alone in his office and he realised that he wanted the world for himself. He began dancing with the globe as a soft Wagner piece gave a dream-like air to the setting.

My definite favorite is the Binary Sunset scene, but the opening theme of the Harry Potter movies is close.[face_peace]

My most memorable musical moment in a movie is the final faceoff between Frank (Henry Fonda) and Harmonica (Charles Bronson) in Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West". I saw it some ten years ago for the first time and the music still makes my spine shiver with excitement. It is the best climax music I've ever heard. All hail Ennio Morricone!

You've got great taste :) I'd have to add to that The Ecstacy Of Gold from THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY. Fantastic editing, dizzying visuals and pure musical genius.

Great scene, however, a bit diminished by the surrounding movie. What's the name of that Wagner piece?

    ---

The finale of Lawrence of Arabia with the string plucks that lead into the end credits. In contrast with the bombasticy of the rest of the score, it works well.

LOTR was revolutionary in its use of music.

My favorite SW musical moment would probably be...

Experts of SW music are probably going to find this weird but in Ep. 5 when Luke has JUST arrived in Cloud City and he sees Han frozen in carbonite being escorted along with Leia and Chewie down the hallway. I don't know the name of the piece but I like the fact that it's just so slow and dark and you just know something bad is about to happen. The same music is played in the PC game Shadows of the Empire in a few parts as well. Other than that I think "Duel of the Fates" and "Battle of the Heroes" are great to listen to while writing replies like this.

here's a few that spring to mind, all of which give me goosebumps each time i see them...

JAWS: The opening credit sequence, from the Great White's point of view, and the assembly of the shark cage.

RAIDERS: Harrison Ford bursting forth from a tent astride a white stallion in pursuit of the truck carrying the Ark.

KING KONG(1933): The sequence in which the crew of the Venture come upon the village and witness the first Kong bridal preparation ceremony, and the scene in which the Bronto capsizes the makeshift life raft and chases the sailors through the jungle(Max Steiner's work on Kong is one of the best scores ever).

NORTH BY NORTHWEST: the Mount Rushmore Sequence.

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD: The scene in which Errol Flynn confidently strides into the court of Prince John and his sychophants, carrying a slain deer over his shoulders.

And my all-time favorite muscial moment...

THE RIGHT STUFF: The sequence in which Sam Shepard pushes his fighter jet for all it's worth into the upper atmosphere, crosscut with the Mercury astronauts back in Houston watching the fan dance set to "Clare du Lune" and exchanging knowing looks of respect and acomplishment.

I really like that one scene in FotR, when the Fellowship comes over that hill and The Ring Goes South is playing...

    Ah, great movie moment.

There are many from LotR. I really can't list them all. Actually, I'd probably have to watch them all again, after watching SW so many times... I guess I just don't remember most of them.

There are many great ones. Can't pick any, since it's not a contest.
