Growing pains when does a club get too big

I have seen as of late many a large club end up reorganizing because the members split off and do their own thing. As a member of a small one is there anything us small ones can do about such problems. I have seen some go thru quite painful and disruptive splits as well. Not sure why though. Is it rl or just someone getting greedy and wanting a position they cant have.
