Yep. He's back at it.

You'd think my dad would've figured out by now that shooting pellets in the direction of the street is not a very wise idea. Not to mention, he's doing it from indoors, so he's sneaking around to the window he shoots out of in the room next to mine. This means that I'll just be sitting here, peacefully eating a sandwich or something, when I get startled by the sound of the pellet rifle firing. It sounds like a very loud rat trap.

Now 'scuse me while I clean up the milk I spilled all over my desk.

I found a sick squirrel last week and gave it to some wildlife rehab place. Guess I should've shot it with a pellet gun to put it ou-- in more misery.

I don't support heartless squirrel murder, but we have big problems here with the damn things so some culling may have to happen since the American Grey has invaded over past decades and killed nearly all the native Red Squirrels (no their fault of course, they have a virus that kills Reds).


Now we even have the freakish Black Squirrels and they're larger and meaner

 

Reds are nicer, and they at least are native to here.

I hate to be nationalist, but the others should go back to where they came from.

Squirrel Jambalaya
~ 2 squirrels, cleaned and quartered
~ 1 pound sausage (your choice), sliced
~ 1 cup whole wheat flour
~ 1 tsp. black pepper
~ 3 tbsp oil
~ 2 onions, chopped
~ 2 celery stalks, chopped
~ 1 clove garlic, chopped
~ 1/4 bell pepper, chopped
~ 4 tbsp chopped parsley
~ 2 cups uncooked rice
~ 1 1/2 cups water
~ 2 tsp salt


Combine 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp of black pepper, and wheat flour. Dust this combination over the squirrel meat.

Brown the squirrel quarters and sausage in the oil in a medium dutch oven. Remove when meat is seared.

Saute the onions, celery, garlic, bell pepper, & parsley in the oil until it is wilted.

Replace the squirrel and sausage in the dutch oven, cover and simmer about 20 minutes or until the squirrel is tender.

Stir in the rice, water, and 1 tsp salt.

Simmer for about 30 minutes or until the rice is tender.

Serves 8.

Department of wildlife and fisheries pays a bounty of $8 for each tail turned in. Combine that with the free meat and the fact that their pelt is among the finest, and this little guy is a bit of a gold mine for anyone who is willing.
