Some school district in Texas is threatening students if they walk out on 3/14, they will face three days suspension. Couple things:

    1. I am pretty sure they know there will be some sort of consequence for walking out of school and I bet dollar to donuts they do not care.
    2. Three day suspension might encourage some students to actually do it especially if have sympathetic teachers who will make sure they don’t miss much.
    3. It isn’t going to hurt their college applications. Matter of fact it help their college application particularly if they are one of the students who help organize it.

As for my school, our union president continues to be naive and IMHO tone deaf. Our principal thankfully is a little more grounded in reality and think has realized it’s going to happen no matter how much we “encourage” them to stay in school in order to participate in classroom discussions since that literally defeats the purpose of the walkout in the first place as I told our chairwoman at breakfast today. Classroom discussions of gun violence will not make “Fox & Friends”, a massive walkout will. Therefore the administration is starting to prepare for it and as suggested to our chairwoman (all department heads are starting to meet with the administration on this) is that if the kids do walk out like we expect will need to have it organized therefore we need monitors at every door way and adults in the front/back parking lot for safety reasons. I would love for all the kids to walk out the front door symbolically but we just under 3000 kids in this school. Suppose half walk out (which seems like the number that is being thrown out) having 1500 kids exist through one door would be a major safety issue.

Edit: Some congressman in Colorado had a town hall meeting about guns. It did not go well for him at all.

If my sons want to participate in such a walkout (if one occurs at their schools), they have my full support, suspension or not. Any college that would hold a suspension for such a walkout against them, does not need my tuition money anyway.

I have heard virtually nothing as an employee but I work at an elementary school and we are not unionized.

Al Hoffman is putting his money where his mouth is too. Won't give anymore to political candidates until they do something about guns.

One possible way to avoid suspension, is to call the school and request that your son/ daughter be released from school early at the time the walkout is planned. (Or try the Ferris Bueller approach :) ) My daughter's school wont suspend anyone, but I may call in to the attendance office just in case.

It will be interesting if the President will consider an assault rifle ban. A White House spokesperson said all options were on the table.

He is rumored to have told the DOJ to give him options for banning bump stocks.

Yeah, UK press are reporting that and age limits to be the start. Also heard universal background checks and banning carrying firearms in public.

I can't imagine Trump selling out his 2a militia men or his NRA money marks over a few dead children.

Trump is an inveterate liar. As with his pledges not to touch the social safety net, I expect him to say whatever he perceives will enhance his popularity at this moment in time, and do whatever caters to his tremendous store of personal bigotries in the long run.

there's also the fact that if he pushed for meaningful gun control he would probably lose the only supporters he has left.

He is obsessed with being better than Obama. Trump has spent the last few days bringing up his predecessors failure to pass gun control measure, so he might do it.

It's sadly amazing that the Manics track has now become true with shootings in the US:

p.s For @anakinfansince1983 - and any other librarian posters - another Manics track that opens: "Libraries gave us power"....

Please. They were absolutely correct to do that. Some deranged 19-year-old walked into a high school last week and killed 17 people with his pornography stash.

Thank you for agreeing with me, that, citizens owning a vast amount of firearms are in fact terrorists and not law-abiding citizens.

I still think he's a POS, but I'll give him props for being willing to go into what he had to know was going to be a very hostile environment for him. Very few other NRA owned politicians would likely have done that.

And OMG Dana Loesh is an awful human being. Saying we need assault weapons incase we're raped? Good grief, the NRA sure picked the right woman to be their spokesperson apparently.
