So the Oscars saw a 14% drop this year. Watch as the panic button gets hit and they try to try to go edgier next year.

Yes, like the tired cliches of teenage African American males and various girls who are obsessed with science. Like I haven't been seeing that my whole life in movies already.

He was chewing gum. Most likely it was a napkin he used to dispose of it. He wouldn't have been so overconfident given that Redmayne had already beaten him for other major awards.

Probably more and more people, such as myself, realizing they can just Google the end results and do something else in the meantime. :p

I think it's because most of the nominations in the major categories like Best Picture weren't widely distributed or huge success at the box office. Meaning, the general movie audience didn't see most of the movies nominated for Best Picture. I've only seen two of the eight nominated films, which were Birdman and Boyhood. Julianne Moore's movie Still Alice was only playing in one movie within a 30 mile range of my house. This most the general audience didn't see most of the these movies, I could see the apathy.

I think Dawn of the Planet of the Apes should have taken the special effects award over Interstellar.

Interstellar's black hole simulation got a lot of media attention. That's what sealed the deal.

It's almost as the award is for which film is best, not the most popular.

no it's not like that at all. Most best picture winners are quickly forgotten.

Don't get me wrong, I get that in practice the award goes to films that never deserved it (though there have been exceptions e.g. No Country For Old Men, The Hurt Locker, 12 Years a Slave) but in theory the nominees and eventual winner are supposed to be the films of the year and frankly those are rarely the ones that make a big impact at the box office.

no, forgotten was too strong. I meant that the best picture roster isn't a reliable list of cinema classics.

I've seen every movie down to 1966.
    I haven't seen 1955, 1951, 1947-1944, 1942, or any of the 1927-1933 winners save for 1929/1930's winner.

That wasn't the point I was making. I wasn't stating the most popular films were not nominated. I'm saying the general audience did not watch most of the films that were nominated in this year's Oscars, probably because they weren't widely distributed as in past years.

To clarify, here's are the box office results of the past couple of years of the movies nominated for Best Picture:

    2013

    Argo - $136,025,503
    Lincoln – $182,207,973
    Amour – $6,739,492 (Foreign)
    Silver Linings Playbook - $132,092,958
    Django Unchained - $162,805,434
    Zero Dark Thirty - $95,720,716
    Life of Pi - $124,987,023
    Les Miserables - $148,809,770
Beast of the Southern Wild - $12,795,746

    2014

    12 Years a Slave - $56,671,993
    Philomena - $37,709,979
    Nebraska - $17,654,912
    Dallas Buyers Club - $27,298,285
    Her - $25,568,251
    American Hustle - $150,117,807
    Gravity - $274,082,705
Wolf of Wall Street - $116,900,694
    Captain Phillips - $107,100,855

    2015

    Boyhood - $25,295,600
    Birdman - $37,922,417
    Grand Budapest Hotel - $59,100,318
    Imitation Game - $84,118,827
    Selma - $49,642,850
    Theory of Everything - $34,196,737
    American Sniper - $320,845,846
    Whiplash - $11,330,000

In 2013, seven of the films made near or over $100 million at the box office. The Oscar ratings were 19% higher than the year before.

In 2014, four of the films made over $100 million at the box office. The Oscar ratings were 8% higher than the year before.

In 2015, only one of the films made over $100 million at the box office. And thus my point, the general movie audience did not go out and see the films nominated for Best Picture and therefore apathetic to the Oscar Awards Show, which is probably why the ratings were low.

Of course, maybe some of those forgotten films are unjustly forgotten.

Looking at the list of winners, I'd say most of them have not been forgotten-- at least not by people who know anything about film. There are some weird winners before the 1960's, though (The Broadway Melody? wtf?) and Crash should be purged.

Don't know if it was his speech. Could have been, but it's a known fact, well usually, if you when the Sag and the PGA you win the Oscar. Eddit won both, plus the Bafta

Does make you sad for him even more though.

The Artist should be purged and forgotten. What a dreadful film that was. It made me lost respect for the Oscars.

It was better than Crash. Crash was a travesty in itself, let alone as a best movie oscar winner
