Halloween Icon Pruning -- Review complete! Thanks, everyone!!

Hello! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Nat, the Icon Manager.

The idea of the icon pruning is to take Halloween icons from being 1500 in number to being . . . well, less. I don't have a specific goal in mind because I want to keep good ones that people use, but I do want to get rid of the ones that are bad, duplicates, or aren't used. That way icons are easier to find, and it doesn't take me three weeks to get them up every year

So that's where you guys come in. I want your opinions. Did yuo see someone use the icon? Did you use it? Do you really like it? Does it look pixillated? Do we have another icon that's really similar?

This is open to anyone - you don't have to be an icon maker to participate (in fact, the more the better). I'm going to post the icons in chunks, and i'd like you to go through and give your opinions on as many as possible. In addition, I'm going to post what I named them based off of personal knowledge or what they were saved as; I could use some help figuring some of those out. I'll post a new chunk every few days, ideally, though I'll wait longer if people are still discussing.

Anyway, come in, post comments (e.g. #2 is awesome, #5 is a duplicate, etc.) on as many as possible, even whether you like it or not. I'm not going to take away icons that people use if I can help it, so the more eyes, the less chance of that happening.

As you'll notice, they're out of order - I'm going alphabetically backward from what they're named on the server (these names will end up changing, but for now it's too complicated to go through them until we're done with each set - I'll change them as we decide which ones to keep, then post a final list of the keepers at the end).

Though I've never used them, i've always liked the Star Wars Zombies (and what with Death Troopers I'm sure they'll become more popular). The Wonder woman Icon, 46, seems a bit squished.

 

Well, the thing I noticed is that we have Halloween icons of characters in shows that aren't very...Halloween-y,IMO. When I think of Halloween, zombies and vampires and werewolves; monsters of that ilk come to mind, plus horror films. And do we send you our votes like we do when we vote on regular icons or should we post our choices right here in the thread?

 

Just post them here And not so much a vote as a lit:

#1: It looks squished.
#2-4: I like the xombies
#5: I saw someone using it.

That sort of thing

 

I'll give my thoughts on this batch, but first I'd like to discuss some things. Is there nobody within the administration who can help around this time of the year when it comes to uploading? Seems like there should be more people with the power to chip in once a year. Personally I love the idea of having so many choices. The problem comes from you having to bear the load of uploading them by yourself, and perhaps the lack of time to use them. 1500 is excessive for a 1 to 2 week period. Could we possibly expand the use of them for all of October or the entire fall?

I wouldn't vote against a comical icon just because of Halloween. While I love disturbing icons more, this is the only time of year people on this board get to use such icons unless they have a santa hat on or a heart. I also won't say "I saw more people using this one" because I have no way of knowing which forums favored which icons without spending all day looking it up, and even then... But when it comes to pruning, duplicates are an easy target.

When it comes to this batch, I would prune...

#13 Zoe - She's almost the same in every shot and #15 is the best of the 3
#14 Zoe - Because #15 is the best
#18 Zero - I like #17 the best as long as someone who likes zero can have 1 icon of him...
#46 Wonder Woman - It is squishy and #45 is better.

 

The "I saw someone wearing it" is just so I know that it should stay, not to say that others would necessarily be deleted if no one uses them (though that might be the case if we have a bunch of icons of the same character - I'd take out the ones people don't use first).

I like having them up for a long time, and having them up all of October was my plan - until my computer crashed, and when I got it back a bit into October, I realized that our total amount of icons were kinda ridiculous. And these icons are from the past several years combined - last year, it appears that only 200 went up (based on the numbe in the 2008 folder on the server). 500 went up the previous year. And among all the really old ones are duplicates, ones that are similar enough to go, and ones that were made badly. Plus, yeah, it took forever - and do we really need that many icons? That seems overmuch, so if we can shave off a few hundred with bad quality or those that have similarities, it would help a ton. Especially since in previous Halloweens, they weren't all put up anyway, so this year is really the odd one out.

As to the other, one or two of the admins have server access and know-how, but they have their own duties, so I don't really want to foist 700 icons off on one of them as ask for them to be up within a week.

 

I wasn't too impressed with the variety last year.

If there really isn't anywhere you can get help from then I guess pruning is the only option. Knocking off a few hundred sounds good, but if the icon makers make a few hundred next year, aren't we back in the same boat?

I'm judging these icons on quality and quantity of the character in the icon first. We can have variety if so many spots aren't given to one character. Sometimes (like with Wolverine) that character is popular enough to warrant a couple of icons, but others...

 

But this is the only time of year people have a chance to use some of these icons unless they put a santa hat or a heart around them. I wouldn't deny someone a character icon just because it wasn't scary enough. Unless we make a costume party month based on non-scary icons 6 months before Halloween, its not really fair to lock out so many clever ideas because its not dead.

Oh and I agree with you about #36. I just didn't want to crap on someones Xerxes parade. I could also agree with getting rid of #9 and #10 if there really are better non-star wars zombie icons.

If there are more X-Men icons of these same characters, then we'd have to pick the best. However I think it's better to have a representative of each character than to have 10 wolverines. So with these and other franchise favorites I think we should keep a close eye on to make sure we don't have multiple of a certain character but no Rogue, Toad, or Sabretooth.

 

In my opinion...

#s 2,3 6,7 & 8 should stay. One word: Darth Troopers. Not that I've read it, but I'm sure others have.

#12 should stay. I've seen at least two, if not three people using it.

#17&18 Not sure what these are, and I never saw anyone use them.

#22 This Yoda Pumpkin really doesn't look that good.

#23 is cute. Keep.

#26 looks kinda pixilated and of poor quality.

#36 as someone else has mentioned...who or what is that?

#37-41 never saw anyone use these.

#43- Was used by more than one user.

#46- poor quality.

I know #30 was in use.

For the X-men icons, we should make sure not to eliminate all of any one character, and some characters (Wolverine) probably do deserve more than one. But Wolverine had 4 just in that set (25,47-9) and probably more elsewhere, and we don't need all of them.

 

Okay, I sort of agree with HanSolo29 here and I understand that perhaps this may be the only time of the year that people can get their favorite stuff up, but IMO it's not that Halloweenish(yes, I hate using that word )

37-41: I like Willy Wonka, but having icons of each of the characters is a bit much IMO.

36 and 46: pixelated and hard to make out.

13 and 14: too dark.(15 is much brighter and shows her features more.)

19: I don't why this is a Halloween icon(except maybe for the red hue)

24 and 30: look similiar(I like 30 better than 24).

 

I like the Star Wars zombies.

 

#2-8 I'm sure some people like these, but they have no appeal to me.
#19 Looks more like a regular icon than a Halloween one.
#21 I like
#22 Doesn't look very good to me.
#23 Cute. I like it.

Most of the rest are of characters I know nothing about, so I don't really have any opinion on them.

 

I'm privileged to put my two cents in. While I wouldn't really wear any of the given icons, save Zod, I think all SW related Halloween icons should stay up. So, 2, 3, 6, 7 &8 should probably stay up. I also like 21, the Yoda pumpkin.

I'm not really into X Men so I'd stick with the main characters. 25, 28, 30, 31 and 33.

Oh and a definite yes for 16, General Zod and 45, Wonderwoman.
