In Game: Morning of 3/10/09. Just after the initial supprise thrust from Covenant Troops against Greenfield's hastily assembled Skirmish Line along State Street.

The remaining 50 percent of Graywolf 3's artillary fire hammered into the positions of the advancing Covenant troops. They had approached to within half a block of State Street when the combination air burst and antipersonnel shells hit. The carnage caused by the shrapnel was working its effect upon the Covenant troops causing them to either withdraw or to dive for cover. Neither tactic worked for long as the combined National Guard Companies 1 and 2 with their armored STRYKERS and HUMVEEs, along with Marine Company A with its STRYKERS and HUMMVEES mopped up using fixed mounted M-19s and M-2s. The Marine infantry supplimented the 40mm grenade fire with FRAG-12 rounds while National Guard troops threw hand grenades fired their M203s into the pockets of resistance. As the last of the shield bearers secummed to their combined fire, elites took up the fight directly with concentrated plasma fire that began slowing the three companies progress. More artillary fire from Graywolf 3 came in and was matched by Covenant Plasma Artillary fire from far east of Greenfield. The STRYKERS and HUMMVEEs raced foreward to both evade the artillary and to press the flanking mannuever into the side of the body of Elite Covenant Troop's supprise thrust. This while spraying the ranks of Elites that had been firing from behind their shield bearers as they had advanced towards the city's center Government location only meer minutes earlier.

    ***********************************************************************

In the mean time, Marine Companies B and C, along with National Guard Company 3 swung back and clockwise luring the Covenant Troops that were howling for their blood while in hot pursuit. The clockwise swinging arm of the US Forces rotated towards north and fell into rank with the National Guard's Anti-Armor Company 4 as the acting backup. The trap was sprung. Five law rockets were fired into the approaching echelon as it came into view. This was immediately followed by a combination of Artillary Fire that had been timed to the second to hammer them before they could call in their own. Main Street was now an all out War Zone. A reenactment of Gettysburg between the North and South. As the Artillary Barrage waned, the Mortars took up the slack and followed into the Elite's ranks. Suddenly the Marine's Infantry rose up and began firing their MAS-12's HE rounds into the wavering Covenant line. Jackels at first, then Elites too began flying backwards in pieces. The Covenant Skirmish line was savaged. The Marine Infantry dropped back down to reload and were replaced by a combination of M-4, M-32 and M-19 Fire. The Covenant troops were in retreat, now with American Forces in hot pursuit. Covenant Artillary Fire came in with a vengence. The Marines and National Guards vectored around to the south and west to avoid the Plasma artillary fire and continue to snap at the Covenant's heels with a constant barrage of AP rounds mixed with an assortment of Grenades, Mortars and Artillary Fire care of Graywolf 3. Those of the Covenant Troops who were in retreat became targets of opportunity for the members of National Guard Company 5 at the Jail while they passed by. Company 5's spotters called in another Artillary Barrage for the Beaten Covenant Strike Force.

    **************************************************************************

Marine Scouts/Snipers had discreetly approached the outskirts of Greenfield's western side. They spotted a good sized division's worth of Shadow's, Spectres, Ghosts and a few they hadn't seen before that looked mighty tough. The communications specialist got behind a wall and spied the communications tower near the Memorial Hospital. He spotted the laser signal device with his Infra-Red goggles and sent in the news out west. Word was then relayed to high command. The information was acknoledged.

IC: As Marine Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Ronald 'T-Rex' Hunter

The Thrust from the East was beaten back but the Covenant was now learning to pull some tricks of their own. They'd committed what appeared to be an Division sized arm swinging to the south, then westward, then hooking north towards old US 40 in a flanking manuever, so as to cut off Greenfield from an escape route. Hunter wasn't concerned with that so much as he was concerned with delaying them long enough for the 1st Marine Tank Battalion showing up in time to engage the Covenant Forces before they could reach Indianapolis. Scouts and Snipers platoon had reported a new vehicle on the scene. 3rd Force Recon, 1st Platoon's Lieutenant Bastin reported seeing those types of bad boy's over by Cambridge, Indiana while on a mercy run back to Wright Patterson AFB with wounded. He'd thought He'd gotten them Squared away with Excelsior Artillary Fire, but now had his doubts. Hunter surmised he was going to need to pull another rabbit out of the old hat once again. He had a plan...and began implimenting it. He knew those things were probably what the Covenant called in for problem areas. Fluid...He had to be fluid. Always changing always enveloping...always eroding his enemy's strength and always undermining his enemy's stability.

"Sargent, Tull! Get me a copy of where the gas mains for the city of Greenfield are located," he ordered. "I've got a trap to set and not much time to set it in, should I need it."

"Aye, Sir" answered Sargent Tull as he scrambled to comply.

Hunter's communications officer turned from his station, stood and approached him then saluted. Hunter returned his salute and reached for the orders from Command. Hunter read the orders then actually sighed with relief. They were to withdraw and head northwest towards I-70 in all haste and from there parallel the Covenant Battalian(s) as they headed west towards Indianapolis. They were not to engage the Covenant Forces directly unless the Covenant Forces were to attempt a crossing north of I-70. Objective fulfilled. Hunter gave the order to withdraw to all companies of both the National Guard and the U. S. Marines and other Navy and Marine Forces operating in and around Greenfield. Artillary fire was called in for suppression of Covenant positions, care of Graywolf 3. Both mortar teams were withdrawn. Company 5 was withdrawn from the jail under Graywolf 3's protective withdrawal fire. DEVGRU was ordered to safeguard the evac of as many patients and personnel operating at Hancock Memorial Hospital as Possible. Marine Force Recon was ordered to assist DEVGRU. With all teams and companies formed up just north of Main Street, the combined US Forces of National Guard, US Marines, Force Recon, DEVGRU and what remnents remained of ST8, withdrew towards the north side of I-70. Even the artillary spotter who'd dutifully been calling in strikes throughout the city's campaign for survival was heading north and west ahead of the last artillary barrage he'd called in for their escape from being cut off. When contact was eventually made with the head of the Covenant's Oroboro manuever, another Graywolf 3 barrage was ordered and delivered on sight and on time. True 50% of the rounds made it through but it was enough. Hunter almost regreted not being able to try out what would have been a very lethal last ditch suprise for his adversary. Oh well, there's always tomorrow, he thought. The ragtag regiment moved out on the north side of I-70. Destination, west towards Indianaplis. They had survived. That in itself was a victory.

OOC: OK. I did my part.

TAG: Come on guys. I can't do it all! Get involved!

Leigh ducked back into the cover of the street corner he was fighting from as bright blue pulse fire ripped past him in return for his fire, looking around at his Delta sniper partner, nodding at him they turned and raced along a debris strune alley and into the back door of a small shop. They ran up the back staircase and onto the rooftop. crouched low they crept to the edge, looking down he ran an eye over the advancing covenant host. Small SF detachments were ranged through the city holding up the covenant advance with brutal hit and run attacks, Gazing through his scope he spotted what looked like a officer, the weird sword they carried helped to give it away. He slowed his breath, closing and reopening his eyes he was calm, the report of his M14 cracked out, blue-purple blood fountained out of the creatures neck as it stumbled and fell. The covenant around it opened up on the surrounding areas, their energy weapons ripping the buildings around them to pieces, Leighs partner Steve opened up with his scoped M4, their fire taking down four more of the ugly aliens. Fire tore the roof edge to pieces and forced the two snipers to dive backwards crawling back to the exit, they tumbled into the stairwell coughing and soot stained. They shared a resigned look "Like stopping the sea with a bucket mate" Leigh commented wryly, pulling each other up they cautiously slipped out of the ruined building and across to another, looking for a good position to put fire into the advancing enemy, the covenant had the city but they would pay for every inch in blood.

School buses had been brought in to transfer the more recovered patients out of Hancock Memorial Hospital. The ones in worst shape were being transfered to a pickup point North and west of Greenfield by ambulance where they were flown out by low flying Military and civilian choppers equiped to transport patients to Indianapolis' west side and then relayed to Chicago, Il. Lt. Commander Anthony Raymond Estiphon and his 'Company' were fighting a savage Covenant thrust aimed at cutting off the retreating National Guard's Indiana Battalian and U.S. Marine's 2nd Battalian. The thrust was from the east and north of Main Street. Covenant troops were using leapfrog cover and fire tactics to keep the pressure up. The new MAS-12s were starting to make the difference in this fight. This while at the same time safe guarding the withdrawal of the Hospital's patients. This part was getting a bit like Rugby, Rough and Ready. The Cuvvies had been steadily improving on their assault tactics. He and the rest of DEVGRU had been increasingly calling in fire from Greywolf 3 until the Morter Team relocated North of I-70. Then they switched to them, while Greywolf 3 spread the joy elsewhere. His response to the Cuvvies methods was to bring them in with feigned weekness and then popup with the MAS-12s. Neat trick, that. It also kept the sticky glue plasma grenades away too. He'd ordered his men to start picking up weapons that had been cleared for use against Covenant assaults. Needlers, Plasma Rifles and Beam Rifles. All were handy, just like the AK-47 was back in 'Nam, when you found yourself behind enemy lines and low on ammo. DEVGRU fought on all the more furiously. Now Estiphon could appreciate the plight of the French Foriegn Legionares when they had to hold a location at all costs. No simple task but the Covenant had plenty of guns for them to pick up and use against the tenacious Covenant Zealots. Finally the last of the civilians were clear of the Hancock Memorial Hospital. Estiphon left them a nice parting shot in the face for when they entered the building, and he knew they would. Charges to bring the roof down on their collective heads when enough of them were inside cheering over their victory. Maybe he'd get really lucky and bag himself a Red or better yet a Gold suit. Yeah well, it was always nice to dream a little dream. Eh? After all the security cams were made for High definition color, and DEVGRU was in control of that internal hospital system. Here cuvvy, cuvvy, cuvvy. He could wait if necessary. Sooner or later they'd come in for some intel. Then BAM! Pay back's a BI***!

The sound of fire was deafening as the troops around him unleashed at the advancing covenant, after several hours of hit and run attacks to the flanks of the covenant force Leigh and Steve had fallen back and made contact with the main force running rearguard. There seemed to be alot of the national guard..part timers. who however were fighting with a ferocity that impressed the experienced operator, well you fight hard for your home he thought to himself as he ducked low to reload. The young soldiers around him kept darting firtive glances at the two operators probably the first time they've seen SF operators up close he thought wryly as he fired a quick, precise burst into a group of the stunty, barking enemy, spinning several to the ground with gases venting from tears in their armoured suits. a fresh wave of enemy burst down the street into the vicious fire of the defenders, on one knee Leigh scaanned through his scope firing at gaps in armour and shields, he stopped and scanned back, there hunched in the lee of a wall was one of the leader caste in bright red armour. The SF elements had been briefed on entry to the theatre on all known intel on the enemy command structure and he knew the reds were high in the enemy chain of command. The red exposed himself long enough to blast a burst of blue laser fire into a heavy weapon position...it was all the time Leigh needed, the big red fell to a knee, bright blue-orange blood fountaining into the air from a ragged tear in its throat, slowly, with a gurgle it fell onto its face in a rapidly expanding pool of its own blood. The covenant around it seemed stunned by the death as the defenders who could see it raised a ragged cheer, "Dont just sit there!!!....open up!! rapid fire!!!" Leigh called out as he emptied a mag into the enemy, sending them sprawling. All around him the defenders opened up with renewed vigour, their fire smashing into the the covenant and ripping through the buildings around them.

Location: Greenfield, IN. North of Main Street and South of Hancock Memorial Hospital on
    State Street.
Time: During the attempted Flanking Manuever to encircle Greenfield and about 45 minutes
after the failed Thrust along central Greenfield.

Situation: Covenant Forces are pressing hard to dislodge Human control of the Government
Center and to push them west into the encircling Pincer at the west end of
Town. This attempt was also failing as National Guard's Indiana Battalian and
the U.S. Marine's 1st Battalian, of the 9th Regiment, of the 2nd Marine
Division (The Walking Dead Battalian), were heading north up State Street in a
race to beat the Covenant Pincer to I-70. Currently both National Guards and
Marines are commanded by Lt. Colonel Terry Ronald 'T-Rex' Hunter. Elements of
DEVGRU, ST8 and Marine Force Recon-upon finishing with assistance to the
evacuation of the Hancock Memorial Hospital-have been dispatched to help DELTA
FORCE and act as rear guard for the remainder of the withdrawal from Greenfield.

    IC: Lt. Red Bastin

Force Recon was in rare form as red smoke cannisters were lobbed in, marking were the Covenant Shooters were trying to pin down and kill withdrawing Guardsmen and Marines alike.

"Pete, take your 'Can Opener' and hit them dead on where the smoke is about ten feet from the cannister," called Mike.

Pvt. Pete raised his M-32, took aim and fired. Jackels were busy firing at a clutch of National Guardsmen pinned across the street. Cars were burning and the Jackels were getting them whittled down to size with their plasma weapons in anticipation of doing the same to the National Guardsmen. Three 40mm Mercury rounds flew into the side window, through an open door into an adjacent room where the Jackels were firing from. Windows as well as walls were blown out with the structure collapsing down on top of the Covenant Shooters.

"Cuvvy Down, Sir," hollered Pvt. Pete. The pinned Guardsmen got up and hussled northward with one of them nursing a wounded arm. Plasma Blossom, he thought. His spotter called out a warning and they laid down a suppressing fire at an advancing Ghost. A LAW sought it out blowing the top off the frame before its guns could be brought to bare on them. He knew what that meant. More were coming!

"Greywolf 3. This is Force Recon. Fire request, fire request. Painted target, painted target. Request Excaliber. Repeat, request Excaliber." Red Gave his fire authorization code.

"On the way!" yelled a buzz saw voice over his earpiece.

"Paint them!" called Mike to his men as the rest of the Ghosts came into view. A doppler shift of approaching howitzer shells climbed up as Excaliber rounds came down on a high angle and slammed into the squad of Ghosts. Red and his men sprinted in anticipation of having to dodge the incoming return fire from the Covenant's own Artillary. Seconds later they were mighty glad they'd moved.

IC: Major Joe Olsen, Commander 1st Tank battalion, New Palestine, Indiana

It had been a torturous march. Covenant flyers, sweeping as far south as Tennessee, and as far north as Lower Michigan and Wisconsin, had indiscriminately shot up any traffic that looked military. Olsen's battalion had been hit a total of 4 times, and the starting number of 30 operational tanks had dwindled to 23. Several of the wrecks were left by the roadside. There was no time to winch them up and haul them somewhere to be repaired. It was hoped that if nothing else, the dead tanks would draw enemy fire.

In addition, the battalion had gotten lost several times, and with radio silence in force, they had to find their own way back on to a productive path. And the refugees. The refugees were everywhere clogging everything from major highways to dirt tracks, all in a desperate attempt to flee the cosmic menace.

But now the battalion was at the final waypoint. There was an artillery detachment in the area, and Olsen had taken a hummer out to see their commanding officer and see if he had any intel or info, or even orders.

The MLRS battery was situated atop of an Indiana equivalent of a hill. They were nestled near a treeline to the east. To the west there was a cornfield. To their immediate south there was a Lutheran church. a hundred yards or so further along a south-west line was a fire station. Covenant counterbattery fire had blasted the fire station to pieces, but the church was almost completely untouched. Though not a religious man, Olsen found that coincidence to be remarkable.

"We shot our load hours ago. Negative impact, every one of them." the Artillery captain said sourly. "The d***** aliens have some kind of anti-artillery system, and it never misses. Not one of our rockets got through their screen. Not one." He shook his head in disgust. "we're just waiting here for re-supply and orders. All the action is about ten miles east."

It didn't need to be said. Flickering light from blazing fires could be seen to the east, and the occasional crump and boom of explosions. Olsen squinted as a blue comet arced into view over the tree line and crashed into Greenfield with an actinic flash some ten miles away. A moment later the grumbling explosion reached them.

IC as Marine Lt. Colonel Terry Ronald 'T-Rex' Hunter, Navy Lt. Commander Anthony Raymond Estiphon and Navy Lt. Sutton:

The 'Mongrel Regiment' as it was coming to be called headed north past I-70, then to Hancock until it reached 300-N Rd. 'T-Rex' had ordered a last minute change almost as though he'd felt a premenition. From there the 'Mongrel Regiment' turned west and headed with all possible speed to the junction with North Fortville Pile. This was in hope of cutting south. While enroute 'T-Rex' noticed a stand of trees west and south of his convoy. Sensing an opportunity for an ambush, Hunter opted for another change in his plans and ordered the convey into the stand of trees across an intervening field. There the convoy set up for an ambush.

    *************************************************

BGs, SEALs and FCs were fighting side by side with Indiana National Guard members against a common alien threat of no small amount. The rear guard action and reenforcements to ensure it were meeting with great resistance by the Covenant soldiers who'd been snapping at the rearguard's lines. All was going according to plan. They'd tie up the advancing ground forces with ambushes and IEDs. This was working well at first but before too long, the oncoming Covenant Soldiers grew wise to that tactic and began indiscriminently blowing up anything that even looked suspicious. For the time being that was fine with the SOCOM crowd. The more ammo the Covvies spent on useless ***p the better. Plus it gave away their position for SOCOM to capitalize on. When this happened, then SOCOM would either call in a barrage from Graywolf 3 or a mortar shelling from the newly relocated Mortar Team.

    Situational Overview:

The Covenant continue their full-court press. Though valiant rearguard actions are delaying the aliens, such actions are costly and casualties are mounting. Worse, ammunition for paladins and mortars are beginning to run low. Individual units from fire teams up to platoons are suddenly being overrun because artillery is unable to respond.

An insightful Sangheili Major-domo has assembled all of his Kig-yar into a hoplite-style phalanx, with shielded Kig-yar up front and Unggoy and Sangheili behind; and assaulted an avenue covered by a marine recon detachment. Faced with the shields, like the persians of antiquity, the Marines were unable to get adequate firepower penetration to stop the phalanx. A fast and intense plasma artillery barrage suppressed the marines, and the Phalanx broke through...

In hand to hand, or rather, hand to talon and teeth, it was no contest. The marines were set upon by the covenant and torn to pieces. The Covenant are now pouring through the gap, and now are bringing down direct fire on the hospital. DEVGRU is about to be flanked and is under fire.

A number of Spirit Dropships were observed heading west, and combat dropping something around I-70 in the vicinity of the Mount Comfort Road exit.

The Australian Sniper has 25 notches in his stock. No doubt there is more to be credited to him from calling in artillery.

IC: Joe Olsen, 1st Tank battalion, west of Philadelphia.

"Action front!" Olsen snapped to his crew. The arthropodic Covenant vehicles were ghosting along US-40 just east of Philadelphia. This would be their one chance to engage them before they found cover in the town.

"Gunner M-PAT, two Shadows. Left Shadow first!" Olsen spat into the intercom.

"Identified!" The gunner roared, excitement and terror filling him.

Olsen heard the metal scrape as am aluminum cartridge slid home. Simultaneously the turret whined onto target, the Shadow filling the night-vision scope, right in the middle of the crosshairs.

    "Up!" The gunner barked.

"Fire!" Olsen practically snapped the words out.

"On the Way!" The gunner's last word was drowned by the tremendous bang and the rocking of the tank.

The round sped downrange and blossomed in ghostly white against night-vision green. Dead on the target. The Shadow slowed, flaming, it's driver and infantry file dead. The Gunner bailed, unhurt, and co-ax MG rounds chased him.

Situation: DEVGRU (by Hancock Memorial Hospital, DELTA FORCE and FORCE RECON over with Rear Guard, have ducked underground by drainage lines heading north towards the direction of Hancock North of I-70. Once Delta and Force Recon that they were clear of the Phalanx's encirclement they popped up again well north of the Covenant trap and set to work some serious payback.

IC: Navy Lt. Commander, Anthony Raymond Estiphon. Navy Lt. Sutton. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Terrence Ronald Hunter. Marine Force Recon Second Lieutenant Michael 'Red' Bastin.

DEVGRU made a similar move out of Hancock Memorial after setting charges for remote detonation in key locations inside the Hospital. As Estiphon watched he saw several Blue clad elites escort a Red clad elite into the interior of Hancock Memorial. Some of the Short Grunts were jumping up and down in apparent celibration. Sutton was watching through his laptop, the remote video feed. Kig Yar were present too. Many Grunts were sent into the Main Complex to search it out the security globes at first untouched. But soon fell prey to the Squat's plasma beam fire. Sutton switched to the hidden auxilleries that resided back in the air vents and other key locations.

"Let me know when we've got some decent numbers of Blues and Reds inside," whispered Estiphon to Sutton.

"Then **** with them real good."

"Aye to that Sir," whispered Sutton in response. His eyes watching for any sign that would clue him in on the enemy catching on to this trap they'd layed for the Cuvvies. A half hour passed and then the Blues and remaining Reds entered the Hospital's main entrance.

"To the victor go the spoils," whispered Sutton.

"Wait until they're good and inside so thay can't escape," said Estiphon.

"Sir there's a small squad of Squats coming up on the roof where the Laser communications relay is located," called specialist Remy Rutcowski.

"Let me know when they start to do something bad with it, Remy," he answered. "Sutton statis on our hospital guests".

"Good enough to kill with, Lieutenant," said Sutton.

    "Take 'em out!" he called.

"Done, Sir," Sutton responded. As the crack of a boom announced the detonation of the Hancock Memorial Hospital's demise and an echoing rumble followed suit.

"Move out," Called Estiphon. They packed up and headed toward's N 300 Rd.

Situation: Delta Force and Force Recon in the interum managed to evade contact with heavy units of the invading Covenant forces, as both groups headed north ward towards 300 N Rd. Having heard the destruction of the Hancock Memorial Hospital, they descretely accelerated their pace to that location then vectored west along 300 N Rd.

OOC: Sorry didn't have the time needed for a good entry on behalf of Delta, Force Recon and Hunter's Group west on 300 N Rd.

Tag: SANC!!! Come a runnin. It's your turn! :)

Xan Edit: gotta star out the whole word. ;)

As IS3 Kalinich, on Interstate 10 somewhere in New Mexico.

The empty New Mexico desert sped by at a hundred miles per hour. As flying was simply out of the question, so I jacked a government-plated Chevy Impala to make the cross-country drive to my new orders with USS Wisconsin(BB-64), which had been recommissioned and rearmed for an assignment with Third Fleet, in San Diego. My dream of serving on a mighty battleship had finally come to fruition, and I couldn't have been more excited.

According to what I'd been told in the lengthy email a day and a half ago, the Third and Seventh Fleets were coordinating for an attack on a Covenant drilling operation over the Mariana Trench. Brass seemed to think this operation would give us some idea of why the aliens were here. It seemed like a waste to me, because all they were doing was poking around an inhospitably deep section of an endless ocean, and there were much more pertinent things the Navy could be using their ships for. The disaster in New Orleans still stung in every one of the scars I'd received in it. A part of me had gone to the depths of Lake Pontchartrain with the John Paul Jones, and it would never be salvageable.

But I couldn't afford to have my emotions cloud what needed to be done. The aliens had cindered the North American continent nearly in half, taking a sizeable chunk of the U.S. population and military with it. Many cities had been evacuated, closed off, or "reinforced". However, I couldn't deny the curiosity of why they were so interested in the deepest stretch of ocean on Earth, when their main objective seemed to simply be to destroy humanity. As my sponsor aboard the Whisky opined, there had to be an ulterior motive to the invasion. And that's what the new task force was to find out.

As IS2 Kittering, aboard USS Essex, at Sasebo, Japan.

He wanted a strong drink. A Four Horseman would do him nicely. He hated this dry Navy as he lay on his bunk in his coveralls. ISs didn't do jack on a ship while it was still in port, so this is where he'd stay for the moment. His job would start some several thousand miles away from chilly Sasebo, with assistance in coordinating the amphibious prong of the assault on a Covenant drilling platform over the Mariana Trench. He didn't see the point of sending ground troops after a drilling rig in the middle of the ocean when the Navy could just annihilate the thing with a few well-placed TLAMs. However, recently-promoted Fleet Admiral Olson had conjectured that there was an ulterior motive to the Covenant invasion, and if the US could identify and exploit it, they could attempt to force a cessation of hostilities.

Honestly, Kit would rather be in the Midwest with a gun and some SEALs killing aliens on the ground, making them pay for every drop of human blood they've spilled.

IC: Major Joe Olsen, Commanding 1st Tank battalion, east of Philadelphia Indiana

A ray of plasma chewed the earth in front of Olsen's tank. The tank's main gun spoke once in reply before the Tank slammed in reverse, moving into some dead ground. As they fell back, Olsen saw in the Night Vision scope a series of small fires dotting the horizon: Dead Shadows and Ghosts, burning in the night. Sprawled, shattered forms of Covenant Infantry also speckled the night vision vista. No more Covenant vehicles approached, but some of the Infantry had dismounted and was occasionally potshotting at the tanks.

If he had infantry support, Olsen would advance and take out the covenant troops. But without it, each tank was too susceptible to flanking. Further, the Alien plasma rifles could open up his tanks like beer cans, not to mention their dreaded grenades. At this point he determined that his best course of action was to hold position (more or less), and try to keep the covenant from cutting off the rag-tag defense force that had gallantly defended Greenfield.

SitRep: National Guard/Marine column headed East on I-70

Trucks, Strykers, hummers and various other vehicles jammed the highway heading east, away from the carnage of greenfield. The men were universally exhausted, their adrenaline reserves low. They had been in continuous action for almost 20 hours, and could only see more deadly action in their future in whatever strongpoint the engineers were erecting around Indianapolis.

A column of Deuce-and-a-half's were only about two miles out from the Greenfield exit. The lead truck and its complement of supplies were gone without an instants warning. A pair of green beams shrieked out of the dark from about eight miles down the highway and blasted the first truck. It leaped into the air, the front axle separating and spinning off into the distance, like a great flaming baton. The body crashed back down into the grassy median separating the east/west roads. The second truck braked, and swerved, attempting to get off the road. The green blasts came again, hitting the truck broadside and blowing it's cargo out onto the highway. The cab lurched over the shoulder and burned.

"Contact! Contact!" Shrieked the driver of the third truck as he swung off the road, getting behind the burning second truck for some kind of cover.

"Unknown covenant weapons system, unknown number of enemy. Column gamma 65 is..."

His words were drowned in static as two more green rays quested, their EM signatures drowning his transmissions. A Hummer bloomed flame. By this time, the rest of the column had pulled off the road and sought some scant protection either in the forests that gripped the edges of the highway, or behind the median. Men and women scattered, crawling up drainpipes, or rushing into the forests in fear. The undamaged cabs lay there with their doors open, and their engines idling.

    The retreat column was stopped.
