IC as Lieutenant Colonel Terrence Ronald "T-Rex" Hunter, Navy Lieutenant Commander Anthony Raymond Estiphon, Navy Senior Lieutenant Richard Steven Sutton, Marine 2nd Lieutenant Michael David "RED" Bastin:

Having anticipated this scenario coming, Hunter called his TOWs -with double penetrator warheads- to be brought into position at the Fortville Pike ambush site. He knew they were going to attempt a gruesome killing of the the retreating Marines and National Guardmen trapped on I-70. The Retreat Column at Fortville Pike or what was left of it was rerouted north on Fortville Pike and directed to take County Road 300N west. Plenty of Stingers were readied just in case of Covenant air assault. DEVGRU, FORCE RECON and the Morter team were immediately vectored to Mount Comfort air field by way of County road 400N to flank the enemy position(s) holding the Mount Comfort Exit and eliminate them. The Morter team would set up for immediate action once at the air field. This was done according to radio silence protocals so as not to give away their position to Covenant Command and Control.

IC as Lt. Commander Anthony Raymond Estiphon, Lieutenant Richard Steven Sutton (DEVGRU) and Marine 2nd Lieutenant Michael David "RED" Bastin:

Seven Hummers with Navy SEALs on board followed by a compliment of Marine Morter Teams, raced at break neck speed down County Road 400 North at Break neck speed. The lead SEAL driver was a recent addition to DEVGRU and had proven himself to be an excellent get-a-way specialist for the team. Anthony had put him in the the lead slot for drivers because of this. DEVGRU was under radio silence due in part to the quick retaliation by the Covenant invaders when ever they made a call for artillary and such. Everybody knew that the clock was ticking and that even now the Covenant was probably eating the trapped portion of the Marine and National Guard Convoy on I-70 alive as they raced westward to the back gate of Mount Comfort Airport's airfield. Hunter had made a last second change in plans and put the Marine Recon platoon in hidden spots to harrass the pursuing Covenant noose that was surely coming up Fortville Pike. They were at the last mile of the run and could see the flames and smoke rolling upward into the late morning sky from the airport.

"Things are hot ahead. Lets make it hotter if their about. Cover our flanks towards the ditch and those quanset styled buildings that have been left alone.

The lead Hummer hit the back gate and bowled over the yielding steel frame as the Gate's chain snapped apart with a "spang" like sound. Gunners were on topside and sweeping their aims for targets of the Covenant variety. Three of them zigged left and four zagged right around the quanset's position. There on the west side stood a Spirit Shuttle aimed away from the approaching SEALs. Being dragged towards the rear entrance to the shuttle's cargo bay was an older gray haired man and a young woman with long brown hair. Both were fighting, but relatively helpless to resist. The Covenant operatives looked to be of a different build and size to what theyed come across before now. These ones were bigger than the ones who wore blue, red or gold colored armer. Their armer was metal gray and appeared to be more rugged. They also appeared to have an abundance of body hair and were more brutish in appearance than other soldiers from the Covenant. They dropped their struggling prey and began raising weapons towards the newly arrived SEAL Team.

    "Hostage situation, headshots-headshots!" Estiphon snapped.

Infrared spots appeared on the heads of the would be kid- nappers and were very quickly followed by craniums exploding into meaty mist as the enemy soldiers began to topple to the ground in twos and threes.

"Stingers ready he yelled!" Estiphon yelled as the shuttle cutting its loses, began rising upward even before the ramps were fully raised.

A Stinger fired from Sutton's Hummer, arced upward seeking the antigrave field even before the Spirit reached 100 feet above deck. As the plasma cannon rotated around to assault the SEALs that had interrupted the new expeditionary soldiers on their abduction mission, the stinger hit the field dead on and continued into the back side of the pilot's compartment. Inspite of the armer on the back side of the flight deck of the craft, it shuttered and then dropped like a stone, stunning the onboard Covenant pilot upon impact.

    Continued...

Sutton's platoon rushed the downed Shuttle.

Estiphon's cleared the Quanset styled building of possible hostiles, from which the Older Man and Younger Woman had been dragged out by the new uncategorised Covenant soldiers. They met up with two more of them standing over a teenaged boy's body arguing over a possession the boy had been clutching to his chest. The boy appeared to be mongoloid from down syndrome and had been holding a plastic sci-fi looking ray gun. He was dead from a chest wound. There was a rod sticking out from it. Their argueing over the trophy ray gun was their undoing as they fell from head shots.

"Clear...clear...clear," came the calls as each room was sweeped and secured. Estiphon informed the two that the boy was dead. They both broke down and cried right then and there. Anthony burned inside. He wanted everyone of those things dead on sight.

"Take the shuttle for transport!", he bellowed.

"It's time to do what we do best! Indiana and the Walking Dead's depending on us. Are we going to let them down?!"

"No, Sir!!", they roared as one.

"Then let's eat them alive! We'll hit them high and low! Sutton I want your group to take the shuttle and distract those Shade turrets," said Estiphon. Sweep past them and land behind what cover you can find, then wait for my signal after we've approached from the north and gotten our selves into striking distance. We'll setup a cross fire and take 'em out from there," ordered Estiphon.

Men and equipment moved with allacrity onto the Spirit Shuttle and it soon departed heading south and a little west of the point of departure towards its destination. Estiphon and his group saddled up and raced to as close as they dared to approach the Shade positions at Mount Comfort Exit on I-70 in their Hummers.

IC as Lieutenant Colonel Terrence Ronald "T-Rex" Hunter, Navy Lieutenant Commander Anthony Raymond Estiphon, Navy Senior Lieutenant Richard Steven Sutton, Marine 2nd Lieutenant Michael David "RED" Bastin:

The Captured Spirit was airborne and heading southwestward. Sutton and his men scoured the landscape for the expected shades and came up with something else. Two larger than life aliens that they'd not seen even until now layed prone along the overpass' eastern side upon the shoulder. They had weapons aimed down range towards the stopped Marine and National Guard convoy. One of them rolled over to observe the Spirit as it passed by then returned to it's prior position effectively ignoring the Spirit and its prize crew.

"Commander, Estiphon. Situation has changed we've got two mobile shooters on foot laying prone, aimed down range at the convoy with large plasma rifles- Over."

Sutton knew he'd broken the rule of radio silence but knew he was mobile for now too. Estiphon didn't have to answer all he had to do was listen.

With the Mortar Team setting up and a Navy Corpman attending to the freed hostages, seven Hummers shot off towards the junction of I-70 and N600W at Mount Comfort. While enroute Estiphon heard the news on what they were facing up ahead. He directed his platoon to adjust its approach towards the overpass by shunting towards the west on West 300 North Rd. until they came to the edge of a farm on their left. Taking the Farm's field access trail they were able to approach and then enter a newly abandoned truck fuel service stop from the rear. From there they began approaching the overpass. Shooters were stationed on top of the roof of the abandoned truck service station for a clearer shot at the new antagonists.

"They're covered in armor sir," said Navy, E3, Pietry. "We can't hit anything that it covers from what we can see... Wait... Sir there seems to be a patch of no armor along the back. Their skin looks to be orange in color" spoke Pietry.

Estiphon mulled that over in his head. With the overpass needed intact in order to get the retreating convoy through, he'd have to use air burst anti-personnel rounds coming in from the airport. At best it might only serve as a distraction for their new pests.

"Mortar team we need clusters on target for the overpass," spoke Estiphon. He fed them the coordinates.

"On the way," called the Mortar Team over the link. He could now see Sutton's team across the freeway setup to assault from the air similtaneously with his. They'd use both the Spirit shuttle and shooters on the roof of the pizza resturant on the far side of I-70.

The rounds came in and suprisingly they weren't intercepted this far west of the skirmish line that had been fought along earlier. The targets did a suprising thing. They leaped over the edge of the overpass and landed below on foot. As the first clusters went off, Estiphon knew it was in vain. These fighters were well trained in the art of war. Upon hearing the approaching mortars they instinctively jumped to lower ground for some better coverage from the submunitions. Too late his men were deployed and commited to the assault. They'd have to adlib along the way. Neither set of shooters had a clear target any more and were now being wasted on a usless jester of warfare. Those two Covenant soldiers knew how to anticipate when they were being attacked and what to do about it. Estiphon called his shooters down from the roof of the truck terminal and they all jumped into his Hummer.

"Man the 50, Pietry. Gates take us to the east side of that over pass. We've got to do this quick and dirty"

The Hummer spun out of the terminal and Estiphon grabbed his M4. Pietry had grabbed one of the Six Pack grenade launchers and had it handy just in case. It was full of Mercury rounds. The barrage of Mortars from the airport had abaited as they approached the other side of the road. They were just in time to catch the two cuvvies as they were already climbing back up to

"Runners were sent west up the I-70 line of stalled transport vehicles in case the line of sight laser communications weren't enough to re-establish command and control. Hunter had gotten word from Estiphon that the way was clear but many from the convoy hadn't gotten the word and returned to their vehicles. Worse still the National Guard Scouts and Marine Force Recon had sent word that the Covenant had a prong of combat vehicles closing on the retreating convoy's location from the south by way of Fortville Pike.

There was no direct on ramp from Fortville Pike to I-70 west bound. But he knew that they could bee line through anything if they set their collective minds to it. Hunter in anticipation of this positioned some of his AT-4s on just his side of the overpass so that they'd barely be below the overpass' crest relative to the approaching prong. The trick was to flip the Heavy combat vehicles in the lead overend like a tortious and block that route should they attempt to encircle Greenfield by way of west 300 North.

The National Guard Scouts and Marine Force Recon who also had spotters would disengage from the first position under a covering fire care of a newly rearmed Greywolf 3 directed at the pursuing Covenant combat vehicles and relocate to new positions to take out any attempted Covenant bypass overflow. If the Covenant had plans to hit the rear of the retreating convoy then he'd order a rear assault on the softer rear armor of the the new heavy "Tanks" that the National Guard Scouts had spotted earlier. As they turned to west at I-70 or just cut across diagonally before the overpass onto I-70--in order to assault the convoy's rear--He'd order the new TOW missles with their hard hitting double warheads fired up the Covenant's rear posteriors.

If the units sent were lighter ones, then they'd hit them head on as they came over the bridge's crest or bypassed it. Once they were stopped at or around the overpass, Hunter anticipated that the Covenant prong would reroute around the overpass further to the east or west, then resume its assault on the Rear Guard's location. Thus the Rear Guard would scoot west and a running battle down I-70 would ensue in order to protect the retreating column. Fire and retreat, fire and retreat. Not a happy thought but one he could live or die with if need be.

Red wanted an edge, but sometimes that wasn't an option. As the Trucks, Hummers and the newer Strykers were getting remanned up the length of I-70 towards Mount Comfort exit. The Stryker M1128 variants with the M68A1E4 105mm auto loading cannon and the M1134 ATGMs with their TOWs would come in handy with the more open areas. With their Cannons and missles aimed towards the direction of the Covenant Forces in pursuit of them they stood a better chance of not being caught off guard. Also with Elites and their camoflage suits it would be necessary to keep the IRV goggles online and in use along with the stryker's own IRV capabilities. The Trucks and Hummers started moving west. The Strykers went for the the shoulder ditches to set up for shooting Covenant combat vehicles and scooting west as an improvised rear guard just in case Hunter's actual rear guard went belly up. Spotters were still at the North Fortville Pike overpass watching approaching Covenant Forces. Soon they'd be repositioning themselves for the big reception. Well this will have to do, he thought.

Mike thumbed the mic on his radio.

"This is 2nd Lieutenant Michael Bastin of United States Marine Force Recon, to any and all US Forces in the vicinity of I-70 between Fortville Pike and Mount Comfort. We are withdrawing west under fire from Covenant Forces and are in need of assistance. This is our first and last call for help, over."

Well, now that would do, he thought.

IC: Major Joe Olsen, with 1st Tank Battalion 1st Marine Division

The battle line of tanks gunned it. A barrage of plasma artillery was falling on the positions they'd vacated just moments before. Apparently some alien had survived and was calling in their position. Time to Diddee-mao.

Olsen peered through the vision blocks, the wafts of cordite tickling his throat as the tank sped along, seeking new alien troops or vehicles. Greenfield grew in the distance. Rather, the glow of greenfield ablaze grew in the distance. A single tall alien leapt from his hiding position and dashed away. Olsen immediately stood up in the cupola, racked the .50 cal and hosed it down with a burst. It fell amongst premature corn.

"Make sure you check your fire." Olsen spoke over the battalion Net. "We're gonna have friendlies retreating through here. Stay alert."

Zogar 'Gaharkee, Sangheili Zealot commanding ground forces "The Oval"

"Priority transmission, honored elder." The staff officer spoke.

'Gaharkee did not acknowledge him for a moment. He was enjoying himself. Victory was at hand. The humans were in retreat, and his advancing forces were savaging their rearguard. In an hour or so, they'd have an open road to "indianapolis" and much of the rest of this continent. The priority message was most likely a Victory Sermon or somesuch from the Prophet of Hope.

'Gaharkee authorized the transmission with his code, and a hologram of Brtak 'Hadaspree appeared.

    "Zealot 'Gaharkee."

    "Yes, honored elder?"

"You are to withdraw, effective immediately and prepare for re-deployment. The Prophet of Hope has... received some divine intelligence regarding a higher priority target in an ocean basin on another hemisphere. The 3rd legion of unrelenting solemnity will relieve your legion. Transport is being arranged..."

"With respect, Elder..." 'Gaharkee said, reining in his disbelief and frustration "What could be a higher priority than winning the war?"

Brtak 'Hadaspree did not answer for a moment, but when he did, there was an unmistakable edge of warning in it.

"You have your orders Zealot 'Gaharkee. Carry them out as the forerunners would want."

As the transmission died, 'Gaharkee was silent for a moment, and then his rage exploded. He hammered his fist against the side of his Command Spectre, bellowing rage. They had stolen his victory! Now only his initial troubles would be recorded in the archives. He'd be lucky to have a logistics staff position at High Charity when this was over. There was no way he'd retain his command.

"Order all units to hold in place. We are to prepare for withdrawal."

There was a pause before his staff responded over the comm. "Yes, honored elder."

Curse these humans. 'Gaharkee thought. They are the scourge of the forerunners.

10 minutes before the Covenant recall:

"Fire!" yelled Red Bastin, as the first two of the Covenant Shadows crested the top of the Fortville Pike overpass at I-70.

Two 84mm missles lanced into the lower face of the double column of Covenant troop carriers as they came on at a hair raising 40 miles per hour. The first two Shadows erupted and flipped upward then came down hard tumbling to a stop. As more crested the overpass more AT-4s followed up at them. The top of the overpass became effectively blocked and the Covenant column began rerouting to either side of the blockage. Those that were part way up the incline and stopped became targets of opportunity for the 105mm toting Strykers west of the overpass hiding along the ditches. Soon the pileup was complete and no more Shadows approached the overpass. As they vectored towards the Strykers that had added such insult to their injury.

"Now!" roared Marine LT. Colonel 'T-Rex Hunter.

Four Strykers with modified TOW penetrators fired a volley into the sides of the Shadows in pursuit of the retreating Column of Hummers and Dodge Trucks. The TOWs hit home and got the Shadows and accompanying Ghosts in their broadsides from between the earthened ramps to either side of the overpass.

"Make ready with the stingers. They'll be calling in the Banshees next!" Hunter called over the net. He then gave the order to move from their hiding spot in the stand of trees. The Strykers moved at once and pressed the rear guard action.

Time: 5 minutes before the Covenant Recall Order.

As the Strykers advanced the lighter Hummers fired their mix of 50s, M-19 40mms and newer M-307 25mm airbursts into the pursuing Covenant as they attempted a reroute and close with the retreating Indiana National Guard and US Marines on I-70. Suddenly a second prong from the Covenant Column appeared around the eastern side of the overpass' earthen ramp. Of the Four leading Strykers, the one on the left most end was hit by a fuelrod round and erupted. The next one left of the hit Stryker returned fire with a TOW that hit at the base of the Fuelrod cannon's turret. The ordinance within exploded sending a shockwave into its fellow Shadows and spoiling their aim long enough for the Hummers to unload into them as well.

Hunter's Strykers dashed for the ditch and realigned their turrets. Then came the new combat vehicles sighted earlier by the National Guard Scouts. They were Lower and wide in front and in back had a wicked looking turret mount. The first ones immediately attacked the remaining rear guard Strykers. High intensity plasma beams of green lighting lanced into the strykers even as they valiently returned fire hitting their targets as intended...but the these new "Wraiths" just kept on coming. The Scouts with their AT-4s were rerouted to either side of the northern ramp and waited for the Wraiths to pass, then began firing into the rear of the advancing line breakers. A thunderous flash erupted as the first of the Wraiths lit off like a roman candle.

"All units, all units. Draw them big ******** out and hit them from behind!" Yelled Hunter over the net. Those Strykers that were able to withdrew along the ditchs with their turrets aimed at the advancing Wraiths, Shadows and Ghosts did so. The AT-4 Teams hunkered down and waited for the Heavies to pass and pursue the Strykers. Off in the distance, the one of the AT-4 Teams spoted a sight for sore eyes. A battle formation of Abrams M1s were fast approaching eastward across a vacated cornfield between Old US 40 and I-70.

"Marine Abrams formation approaching from the southwest heading eastward towards Greenfield...somebody get those guys heading up here pronto!"

Hunter grabbed his mic to speak. It was about time!

"This is Marine LT. Colonel Terrence Hunter. Who's in charge of that group of Marine M1s? Is that the 1st Marine Division's 1st Tank Battalian approaching?, Hunter paused then thumbed his mic again. Approaching Tank Battalian! Please Identify! This is Lt. Colonel Terrence Hunter in temporary command of the 1st Battalian, 9th Marines. Who's in command of that approaching line of M1s? Please respond!"

"Thi...Walking Dead...under heavy fire from...forces...banshees closing on us...we're between North Fortville Pike and Mount Comfort Road along I-70. We're fighting a holding action as rear guard for the column as it retreats west towards Mount Comfort by I-70. We've got something new chewing on our rear guard that's comparable to your Tanks. Their front armor's too tuff. But the rear armor's doable. I've got every last one of them face front with me. If you can use the Fortville Pike overpass earthened ramps for cover, you can catch them with their pants down. When they turn to you I can start hitting them from their behind!"

Hunter released the mic button to listen. Another TOW was fired and hit deliberately lower in the chin of a Wraith. It flipped over on its top like a tortois on its back. He had only two of his Strykers left. His Scouts counted ten Wraiths still in the fight at this end. Enemy troops were starting to charge the ramps from the south and were throwing plasma grenades over the heap of trashed Shadows. Then came the Banshees...

    "Stingers up!" he roared.

"Roger that Walking Dead, Hold your position."

Despite the Covenants excellent tracking of human transmissions, even burst transmissions, the fact that Plasma had not been dropped on his battalion from space in the last weeks meant that Olsen was no longer feeling his guts dissolve every time he broadcast something on the net. He switched the battalion frequency, and detailed companies one and two to wheel left and prepare to engage unknown number of enemy vehicles at a certain grid reference. He received acknowledgment, then stood up in the cupola.

Peering through the vision blocks, he saw a long patchy copse of trees that separated the edges of I-70 from the fertile farmland of Indiana. The Abrams and its brethren lurched as they began to wheel left and accelerate to attack speed. Flashes snapped in the eerie green of night vision: explosions from the highway of the aliens pressing home their attack.

He quickly sent out a frag: "Clambake 1 & Clambake 2 (the two platoons of 1st company) will wheel down the highway engaging all targets of opportunity. Clambake 3 (1st platoon, 2nd company) will overwatch to the west. Clambake 4 (2nd Platoon, 2nd company) Overwatch East. Execute."

He received acknowledgment. At the same moment, his tank canted upwards and the suspension creaked as the 70 ton vehicle roared up over the berm and onto the highway.

In his scope, he saw them. Like enormous beetles hovering a foot above the ground. They were the largest alien vehicles he'd seen. As he watched, one belched a plasma round that flared his screen as it swept in a low arc onto a presumed american position where small arms had been pecking at it. It seemed identical to the Alien artillery. The "tanks" were advancing laconically, either very slow or supremely confident in their invincibility. There were four of them. a Fifth lay disabled about a hundred meters closer to Olsen's position.

"Gunner, Sabot, 4 Tanks, 600 meters! Right tank first!"

    "Identified!"

He heard the whir of the ammo door and the metal scrape as the aluminum-jacketed round slid out, and then into the breech of the gun.

    "Up!"

    "Fire!"

    "On the way."

The tank bucked as it spoke. Olsen's crew had been a hair faster than the rest of the two platoons on the attack. His round loosed on the night vision, a white dot streaking out toward the target on the horizon.

To his utter horror, the tracer dot of the DU sabot collided with the target, only to suddenly shoot skywards.

The DU round, the densest substance available, the silver bullet of the american arsenal, which had plinked countless soviet-built T-72's in the two wars in Iraq... bounced off.

The kinetic energy of the round was somewhat telling though. The Covenant vehicle was slewed by the impact, drifting forward on its gravity cushion for a moment, and then the whole enemy unit began to turn. All the rest of the Sabot rounds had had similar effect.

"NI! Negative Impact! Load HEAT! Driver Right turn, get us off the highway."

The enemy plasma mortars flared. Cometoids of plasma raced towards them.

"Oh *****!" Somebody shrieked over the net, an instant before the pundits tank was turned to a mound of white-hot slag.

"Stay off the net! Evasive action all units, find cover and continue to engage!" Olsen bawled. he switched settings on commo.

Hunter's two remaining Strykers fired two TOW Missles each in close succession at the rear of four of the five remaining Wraiths, spoiling their aims at the oncoming M1s. The fifth one fired unabaited. Half of the remaining Special Forces and Scouts were fighting Covenant Infantry while the other half brought up fresh AT-4 BSs and hammered on the rear of the fifth Wraith. Finally the rear of the fifth Wraith cracked and the power plant blew. The heat that radiated from the core was terrible and both Covenant and human soldiers were incinerated by it's brightness. The Wraith commander jettisoned the core as the failing magnetic bubble winked out-in an effort to save himself and his crew-leaving nothing to shield the surrounding environment from the fusion reaction. The explosion-though smaller than the earlier one brought on by the Compromised SCARAB-was intense enough to scatter the remaining Wraiths in the company of their wounded comrade. All of their hulls were flipped over from collisions they'd suffered with obstacles they slammed into from the expanding fireball. Zealot Zogar 'Gaharkee who'd now been slamming his fist on the inner wall of his command car had a new reason to be very, very angry. Lt. Colonel Hunter and his Rear Guard were gone, but effectively so were 'Gaharkee's foreward Wraiths.

"With my shield... or on it," spoke a spotter from the Old US 40, last line of defence, as he rose back up to observe the results of the battle of I-70's latest crest.

    I-70 ridgeline

Aussie rolled to the side as a plasma grenade exploded near him, sending clods of dirt over his already blood and grime covered clothes. He coffed out dirt as he monkey crawled back up to the crest of the rampway and looked over the sights of his M21 sniper rifle, spotting several targets he entered his breathing cycle and took aim, shot after shot rang out in quick succession, covenant troopers dropping to the ground like puppets with their strings cut, as his shots exploded their heads in a spray of multicoloured blood. The air around him was a cachophony of noise as tracers and plasma fire split the sky, as he ran hunched over in search of a new firing position. As he breasted the lower end of the rampway he came across two of the stunted enemy as they fired green plasma in the direction of some of Aussies compatriots even as they poured fire into the advancing covenant.

he saw the suprise in their eyes even as he stumbled into them, without hesitation he lashed out front kicking one 3 meters back onto its rear and smashing the but of his rifle into the face of the other, there was a series of loud cracks as it went down silently, spraying Aussie with blue orange blood. He spun and in one smooth motion he fired, blowing the back of the second covenants skull out, he looked on at a hellish scene as vehicles from both sides burned, giving the night a orange hue, through his nightvision his could see soldiers and covenant locked in desperate combat around the vehicles "ahh bloody hell!!...why not" he muttered to himself as he lurched to a run, his rifle in the shoulder as he fired at the enemy over open sights, sending several sprawling as he dove into the malstrom.

OOC: Guys, play a while in this. We're about to dramatically shift locale, and since Morkai is just back in, he deserves a chance to ply his trade. So, essentially, the Covenant are going to dig in and quit advancing. Some of the crack units are being withdrawn for new operations. Go.

Red Bastin was far enough west on the otherside of the blast on I-70, that his second string rear guard was clear of the damaging effects of the failed magnetic bubble. Hunter had charged in to catch the Wraiths by surprise and capitalise on them turning towards the Battlalian of M-1s that drew their attention away from Hunter's Rear Guard of TOW totting Strykers. As the AT-4 Teams concentrated their fire on the fifth Wraith's cracked rear monochrystaline armor, Hunter raced in to disrupt the Wraiths further and spoil their aim down range towards the M-1s that were undergoing evasive manuevers in an effort to dodge the plasma beams that had already bloodied their Battalian's closer tanks. No one could have anticipated that the fifth Wraith's fusion reactor had a damaged feed control governer and that said governer was no longer limiting the amount of Tritium being dumped into the mix. Those caught in the burning glare of the fusion burst were incinerated to a fourth degree burn. Those lucky enough to be in the shadow of combat vehicles lived to fight another day. There was plenty more on both sides. So the fighting continued. But an unusual thing occured. Those that had been lost by the Covenant were not being replenished. Neither were they pressing foreward now as they had been earlier. Something had happened. Red smelled a change in the wind coming. He took the Mic and spoke having heard the chatter between Hunter and Olsen just before the Little Big Burn.

"This is Walking Dead. Red Tail be advised that Colonel Hunter was Killed In Action. This is Second Leutenant Michael Bastin in temporary command of Walking Dead until we can find somebody else. We need tanks and you need infantry. The Covenant's stopped their advance and are not replenishing their foreward troops. They seem to be attempting a holding action of their own. Semper Fi, sir! I know we can take them!"

Red unthumbed his mic, then gave his Stryker's driver the order to stop retreating and turn around. He spied Covenant Troops along the south side of the overpass withdrawing back towards their waiting Shadow troop transports.

"Gunner, Search right along the southern ramp of North Fortville Pike. Take out that pile up of Shadow's that are starting to load up with Covenant troops for withdrawal. Rear one first."

A 105mm Heat was autoloaded as the turret swung right towards the target area. The cannon spoke as the Stryker rocked. The round slide down range and connected with the enemy's mid foreward hull beneath the turret. It's energy magazine blew straight up, engulfing the turret in green fire.

"Let's show them cruds how we make swiss cheese! Gunner another HEAT round! Driver evasive manuevers as we approach Red Tail's position. Gunner take out the next Shadow foreward of your last target!"

The 105 spoke again as the styker rocked. Plasma rounds atarted comeing their way.

    He'd decided to attack.

Lacking orders to the contrary, Olsen had gone with his gut instinct, and with the standing order to counterattack the enemy whenever feasible. This seemed the time. He spent time re-positioning the battalion to incorporate the Strykers and their infantry.

"Major, what is it with us and ad hoc forces?" Olsen's gunner asked.

"We play the hand we're dealt. besides, when you joined up, you didn't really expect to die in bed did you?" Olsen couldn't see his gunner's face, nor the gunner his, but he hoped he took it as a joke. Sort of a joke anyway.

"Well, I expected to die in a naked girl avalanche..."

A cheap joke, but under all the stress, all four men in the tank guffawed. A moment later, the last of the Tank platoons signaled that it was in position. Though outranked by Colonel Hunter, they both agreed in a quick conference on the M-1's turret, that in this instance of armored mobile warfare the man with the experience--Olsen-- should command.

Olsen picked up the hand mic. "Execute."

The great Turbines of the Abrams' roared. The Strykers revved their engines in chorus, and the whole mixed unit began to roll east. No longer giving ground, but taking it back.

With awful suddeness Aussie was hurled sideways through the air as the shadow nearest him exploded in a blossom of green flame, he landed meters away with a thud as he rolled across the churned up ground. He awoke several seconds later with a low groan, he rolled sideways and found himself staring into the souless eyes of a jackal, reacting more out of instict than anything else he snatched the combat knife from the front of his chest rig and rolling on to the animal he rammed it into the vile things neck. Bright blue/orange blood spurted out covering the burnt remnant of his sleeve and over his arm and shoulder, he sawed slowly across the beasts throat, his teeth bared as he ripped the jackals throat out with a series of vicious jerks of his hand. Rolling over he groped around for a weapon, finding a discarded M4 and taking stock of the situation, as he struggled to his knees he looked around...chaos had decended.

Another Shadow exploded near him, the heat washing across him as more covenant died in flaming agony, He shouldered the M4 and picked off several misshappen shapes that were silhoetted against the flaming wreckage. He moved sideways towards a small knot of fellow SF soldiers who had regrouped as the first of the US armour ranged over the crest, they all couldnt help but smile as the amoured wedge slammed highly effective fire into the confused covenant. He recognised one of the others as a mate from Delta known imaginativly as 'Tex', a 6 foot tall bear of a man he had met soon after arriving in the U.S he slapped Aussie on the shoulder as another Shadow was reduced to wreckage "you little beauty" Aussie laughed as he slapped him back. the small group ran forward into a peice of dead ground, pouring fire into the the fleeing covenant as one of the others radioed in giving a SITREP and looking for updated orders. Aussie had to admit, it was good to give the covenant a taste of their own medicine

    SITREP:

With the arrival of the 1st Marine Division's 1st Tank Battalian, the tide had finally begun to turn against the Covenant Forces that had amassed at the Fortville Pike Overpass. This became known as the Battle for I-70. At a crucial moment when the Covenant Forces paused for a switch out of units for their replacements by another Legion coming up from the rear, an ambush was set into motion meer moments before the Covenant switch out began. Covenant Wraiths had been on scene to press the Covenant advance and to destroy as many of the retreating Human Marines and National Guardsmen as possible. The ploy had failed in part because the Humans assigned to rear guard were determined to stop the Covenant advance anyway possible and because the Hunter Fire Team had been eliminated by a Human SF Team sent to eliminate the Hunter Team. After 1st Tank Battalian got the Covenant's attention, the two remaining Strykers and an assortment of AT-4 CS fire teams unleashed a severe assault on the rear side of the Wraiths that had turned their fire on the approaching M-1s of the 1st Marine Tank Battalian. One of the remaining Wraiths suffered a critical structural failure in it's rear hull and lost containment of its Fusion reactor's magnetic bubble. In a frantic effort to save his crew and himself the Wraith's commander jettisoned the fusion core just as the magnetic bubble winked out and it flashed. Though much reduced compared to the previous detonation of the Scarab nearly two days earlier, the flash was hot enough to cause incineration against Human and Covenant troops alike. Those who were under cover or behind the earthened embankment of the Fortville Pike Rd. Overpass, faired much better. Fortunately, there was a much larger number of humans that were hunkered down as the core shot skyward, though not all were as lucky. The move though tragic for those that died proved to be the straw that broke the Camel's Back. The order to switch out had reached the Covenant Troops and they began withdrawing back to their Shadow troop carriers only to be picked off from far reaching sniper fire from SF snipers and farther reaching 120mm smooth bore Reign Metal Manufactured cannons using HEAT Rounds to take out their transportation. Now they were starting to get whatthey'd been dishing out for the past few days for a change. Human moral was at its peek for the first time since the war for Earth had begun back in second battle of New Orleans. The humans were not to be denied. They came on with a vengence that could only be described as LEGENDARY.

The counter punch was taking its tole on the Covenant Soldiers as they tried time after time to regroup only to be mowed down by Human infantry, sniper, artillery/mortar and direct cannon fire. Now the "ad hoc" Marines and National Guards were in their element working side by side taking out those that had been their bane since three days earlier. It was payback time. Word finally came to the front where Delta Force was in the thick of it. Command wanted at least one of those Wraiths intact and in their posession, pulled clear of the Covenant skirmish line so that the Science Boys could back engineer its technology. SOCOM was still up by Mount Comfort and not available. But Delta was in the thick of it, when word from command came through and was heard by the radio man.

    loc: shadow of I-70 turnpike

The soldier on the radio, scrambled over to the others with the SITREP, Aussie's eyebrows collided as he stared at the radioman "You must be f#@king kidding right?!?!?" he said as he slammed a fresh clip into his new found M4 "a bloody Wraith?, they dont ask for much huh?" he said as the others snorted in agreement, he looked across the battlefield and spotted a wraith swooping in towards a knot of panicking covenant, "bingo" Aussie whispered with a nod "Alright boys lets go for a joy ride" he said with a wave of his hand. The small group got up and ran forward into the night, each man covering a sector of the night as they approached the transport, just as the covenant were about to embark 5 grenades flew silently through the night towards them. Without warning a series of expolsions ripped through the tightly packed group, sending bodies as well as body parts hurling in several directions, the Delta soldiers ran silently through the carnage and moaning mortal wounded and leapt aboard, determination etched into they're every movement.

With a swift economy of movement the special forces soldiers moved through the transport eliminating the crew, Aussie flowed around a corner and found the pilot, a double tap to the back of its head and it slid sideways off the seat, its blood and brain matter splattering the screen. He pushed the body out of the seat and took its position, He looked down at the controls "May as well be bloody ancient greek" he muttered, he took a chance an pressed an illuminated section infront of him and to his suprise the vehicle settled slowly onto the ground. He depressed the button on the comms around his neck and talked to the rest of the ad-hoc squad "Alright boys, disembark and take up security" in a small time the soldiers were out and took up firepositions on the forward side of the wraith, Leigh knelt next to the soldier with main comms and took the hands set "This is Delta four three to any command element we have taken posession of a covenant wraith and need immediate re-enforcement to secure the area, we are are marking our position with IR strobe..out". With that Tex threw a IR marker onto the top of the wraith and they settled in to hold of anycounter attacks, Aussie spat out a mix of pleghm and blood and took a sight picture over the M4 hurry up boys he thought to hisself as he began to fire at approaching shapes in the darkness.

"This is Delta four three to any command element we have taken posession of a covenant wraith and need immediate re-enforcement to secure the area, we are are marking our position with IR strobe..out". Red heard the call sign and ordered his Stryker crew to search for the IR Strobes.

"Spotted them," called the gunner. "South of the Overpass Ramp and west of Fortville Pike Rd." Mike relayed the news to Major Olsen of the catch.

"Keep the Covenant creeps off of them while we role over their Covenant lines, crush their Covenant bodies and watch as their Covenant entrails exit through their Covenant mouths, boys...and don't forget to laugh while we're doing that."

The Stryker M1128 roared foreward flanked by an 1126 troop carrier and an 1134 anti-tank model. All three began firing on any Covenant Troops trying to approach the captured Wraith with their copula mounted Fifties and M-60 Machine Guns. Tracers started ripping across the field into pockets of Covenant Kyg Yar with their shields. The 1126 fired a string of 40mm grenades from its M-19 into their mass with spectacular results. The ground in their midst erupted into exploding rock, body parts and little else.

Then came a fresh run of Banshees.

"Stingers up!" called Red over the net. The strykers went evasive immediately and continued their fire on enemy vehicles while, US Infantry brought their Stingers to bare on the approaching Banshees. Fire lances launched up and at the approaching swarm as many of the Banshees attempted jinking evasive manuevers. The Stinger crews had been practicing and counciling one another on how the defeat that tactic to evade stingers. They got backup painters to keep the dots on the little *****. This made a world of difference in the end and resulted in a high degree of solid impacts against Covenant Banshees. Within a few minutes the flying hellions departed with substantially fewer pilots than what they had started with.

"They'll radio our position." Olsen said. "We have to move."

The Banshees were departing, but they'd left several burning vehicles. None of his tanks, thank goodness. Silently, he chastised himself for such thinking.

"Mount up, We'll shift echelon left. Scouts to the fore. Advance to contact, then fall back." Several hummers and Strykers roared off.

The line of armored cars, strykers, and hummers left the highway and proceeded cross-country for about 2 klicks. Then, abruptly one of the Strykers ate a Fuel rod round in the cupola. The driver bailed, and the rest of the scout team came to a halt. 50 cals and Bushmasters chattered, kicking up puffs of dust, raking the area where the fire had come from.

In response, enemy needles and plasma fired. A storm of hard light from a treeline. Another stryker got a front wheel blown off, the remains fused to the axle, grinding metal. The scouts began to withdraw, signaling their find. Static. Too much plasma interference.

Suddenly two hummers on the flank leapt up on a cushion of flame. half a dozen Ghosts had appeared on the flank. They'd been hiding behind a pair of silos. They raced into the scouts' line, shooting up everything in their path. One stryker dropped its infantry, but most of them never even touched the ground, as a spray of blue plasma claimed them. The last survivor ran, only to be clipped by a ghost as it rushed by. His body was tossed in the air. Only one hummer was able to break contact, and ran for the rear, weaving around a farm house for cover.

The ghosts wheeled around the burning wrecks, the commander of the Ghost lance slowed to a halt and signaled the file in the woods.

    "All clear."

Xysto 'Grontroa, commander of the ghost lance, remounted his vehicle, and spoke into his comlink.

"You see? THAT is how we beat the humans. use their own trickery against them. We'll do it again to the main force. All units pull back to sector 7, we shall re-set the trap there. This time with the Wraiths and Vampires."

He zipped off on his ghost. He realized that he was giving orders to Sangheili far superior to him in rank. But they were deferring for the moment since he'd gained results in the last cycles and survived against human concentrations of fire. His own Scout lance was seriously understrength from the initial fighting further east, but he'd patched it together along with other shattered units in the rear to form a cohesive Lance, and immediately headed back to the front.

His superiors respected that. And so they followed his advice. Best of all, it seemed to be working.
