Why not? He's the father of Luke. This creates an emotional resonance with the planet, and also explains why Vader didn't go back to search for Luke there...he didn't want to return.

Because he and Artoo were always part of the Saga, ever since Lucas had the idea of three trilogies.

Lucas does not cater to fanboys when it comes to cameos.

 

Ever read or see an interview with GL? He compares the SW saga to a song or poem, which have repeating chouruses or whatever they're called.

There are many parallels between Luke and his father:

Both from Tatooine.

Both leave Tatooine with an old Jedi.

Both have a dog fight and save the day.

And there are things that happen in AotC to Anakin that happened to Luke as well, but I won't tell here cause they're too big to spoil (I wish I didn't know )

And in E3 Anakin will face the same choice that Luke did in RotJ, but Anakin will choose differently, as we all know.

Seems only sensible that they include him IMHO.

Thats exactly why Han should not be in Episode 3. GL wouldn't be doing it for the benefit of the plot, he would be doing it for promotional and publicity kicks.
