?I?m disgusting.?

Those were the words that dragged Han from the land of sleep. He blinked for a moment, wondering if he had imagined them as part of some bizarre dream. Sitting up, he saw Leia staring into the mirror, a single tear tracing down her cheek.

Alarmed, Han slid out of the bed and raced to her. ?Are you all right?? he asked, his concern turning his voice husky. Immediately, his hands settled over that part of her that seemed to be the focus of their world lately. The life in her belly moved and wriggled beneath his hand.

Leia continued to look in the mirror. ?I look disgusting,? she repeated. ?Too gross to live,? she pronounced.

?Excuse me?? Han said, very confused by both her words and her demeanor.

She sighed heavily and turned toward him. Cradling her belly in her hands, she hissed, ?This?? The ferocity of her tone was at odds with the tenderness of her touch. ?My belly?it?s huge??

He made the mistake of laughing. ?You?re pregnant, it?s supposed to be huge,? Han said with a proud grin.

Scowling at him, Leia asked in a low voice, ?So you agree it?s huge?? There was a dangerous edge to her voice now.

For the first time, Han recognized his peril. ?Uh no?not exactly?it?s?? He swallowed hard and took a step back, desperately searching for the right words. He came to the terrifying conclusion that there weren?t any. ?What I mean is?? He cleared his throat. ?You?re only about ten days away from delivery ? with twins, I might add ? and you have to expect-? Her eyes narrowed. He stopped. Paused. Considered. There was no way to save it, so he would have to bluff. ?You look beautiful,? he gushed. ?You?re gl-?

?If you tell me that I?m glowing I?m going to scream,? she warned. ?After I hit you.?

?I wasn?t going to say glowing,? he denied hastily ? and telling a huge lie in the process. ?Just gorgeous.? Looking at her hopefully, he admitted that he was pleased with that last bit of improvisation.

She lifted one brow at him, pinning him with the same look she?d been known to use on politicians who were not bending to her will fast enough or with enough enthusiasm. ?I would think that a man of your?reputation could come up with something better than that.?

Slightly indignant, Han threw her a disgruntled glance. ?I?m working under pressure here.?

?Don?t you dare talk to me about pressure,? Leia snapped and tapped the taut skin of her belly.

There was a long moment of silence. Han almost wished she would go into labor and end the conversation. Almost.

?I?m gonna be real honest here, sweetheart,? Han finally confessed when it became obvious that labor was not imminent. ?I?ve got no idea what I?m supposed to say or do here.? He thought he saw her lips twitch, but her eyes remained narrowed and cool.

?You don?t, huh?? There was smug satisfaction in her voice.

?Not a kriffin? clue,? he admitted with a lopsided grin.

?Good,? Leia murmured. ?I like a man who knows his own limitations.?

?I?ve always got you around to remind me if I forget,? he said cheerfully, wondering how long it would be before the tears started up again.

?Damn straight,? Leia agreed vehemently. ?And I?ll remind you twice if I have to,? she added with a shaky laugh.

?I have no doubt,? Han said and put his arm around her, feeling it was safe to lead her away from the mirror. He should have taken that thing off the wall, he mused. He had seen her give it increasingly disgusted looks as the months went on. Of course, he had also watched her cradle her belly and stare into the mirror with a look of love on her face that almost made him jealous. Almost.

Suddenly he felt her tremble against him. ?I am disgusting!? she wailed and Han barely kept himself from rolling his eyes. That was the bad thing about being

I loved that. Han can only get away with so much in a Jedi family.

A big AWWWWWW!!! - Everytime I read a nice, mushy story like this, I swear I'm never going to read another profic book again! Then I can believe that H/L were GOOD parents and had good kids, too. Like they deserved.

Absolutely beautiful fic. I think Han Solo would make a better diplomat than he's given credit for -- especially after handling a overworked, preggers Jedi-in-training.

Plus, I have this amazing mental image of a old, gray and not-very-wizened Han with a bit of a plumber's crack goin' on, and that's going to make my whole weekend that much better.

 

The minute I saw the word Han Solo and diplomat in the title, I was interested. It seems that my interest was not unfounded. The last line made me smile, but the middle was what made me chuckle...

Yup, all plans go out the window with that line! Happened to my hubby, too! He was just walking out the door to go shopping at the new Trader Joe's, and I told him that he wasn't going anywhere except the hospital with me! That was our last one... (The first, he was out of country, the second, he was just settling in on "the throne" at work when I buzzed him. Took him a second to figure out what that strange vibration was!)
