Today is the 10-year anniversary of The Phantom Menace.

    ?I know, right?

    Wow.

Did anybody here see it opening night/weekend? What do you remember about it and the pre-movie hype?

    Man, ten years....

I paid a packet to see it at the Ziegfield in NY on opening day as we had to wait two or three months after the US release. :-B (And downloading wasn't possible. We could only dream of broadband back then, I think I was on a 28kbs dialup modem  )
There was a lot of pre-release hype (I remember Darth Maul figures going for silly money for a while), though of course it soon tailed off and you had the beginning of the 'Luca$$/Lucarse" backlash.

Looking back, it's not a great film, and Jake Lloyd/Jar Jar are painful to watch, but I did like Qui-Gon, it wasn't wall to wall CGI like the next two films, and there wasn't any fanwank stuff like Jango/Boba Fett, Wookiees, or Chewbacca.

The first thing I remember hearing was that Liam Neeson was going to be a Jedi. I was sold. :p [face_love]

Tim and I saw it opening weekend at the Majestic (back when it was nice) and we felt a little silly because we just KNEW it would be a theater full of teenagers. We underestimated our fandom. ;) The line around the building was all people our age and we talked to complete strangers like we'd known each other for years, LOL.

We whooped and hollered for the opening crawl and cheered for everything - the Jedi, the Sith, Palpatine...R2-D2 just about brought the house down. [face_laugh] It was awesome!!

And the BEST part: A little boy about 7 years old leaving the theater holding his father's hand saying, "That was so COOL, Dad!" His dad looked like this - > :D

I remember I was sixteen years old, and my neice was nine. My mother brought the both of us down to Memphis to see it on a weekend. The thing I remember most about TPM was that memorable scene where Darth Maul takes off his hood when he's just about to duel Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan...and my mother yells out in the crowded theater "Hey, he's horny!!"

We then went to Taco Bell to get toys. And everyone at school feared my return because they knew I would probably come to class with a lightsaber. [face_whistling]

    "Ten years........"

"When you say it like that...."

"You wonder where it all went...."

(With apologies to Tim Robins and Morgan Freeman)

    How time flies.......

I was (and still am) a glutton for media-hype in regards to blockbuster movies. I enjoyed TPM and still don't reckon it's as bad as everyone makes out.

There were three great moments for me.

Obi-Wan's opening line......maybe only true SW nuts got a laugh out of that.

The Pod Race. I made sure we went to a cinema with a decent sound system and I remember FEELING the pods go past, the thumps of the engines right through the chest like the bass at a rock concert.

    But above all......

I'd tried to avoid spoilers, but I'd caught glimpses of ads with George and others saying that we would FINALLY get to see Jedi in their prime wielding their light sabers. None of this old fart OBW-DV crap or the Inspector Gadget DV vs a young-up-and-comer. THIS was going to be gooooooooooood!!!!!

A glimspe here and there, a snippet of a fight in the desert..... but when those doors opened and Darth Maul looked up, the hair LITERALLY stood up on the back of my neck!! My wife reckons I was almost drooling in anticipation, eyes wide, grinning like a chesire cat!!

Loved the fight, loved the set, loved the music, hated the climax. For someone with lightning fast reflexes....... well, you know the story.

Ten years....... well I'll be damned......

I remember it was my birthday, my paents and I were on our way back to SC from Memphis and I wanted to see it, so we stopped at three are four different theatres on the way trying to find one that was playing. I think we were in Alabama at the time, and I counldnt figure out why they werent playing it.

    (Sneaks in, if that's alright? ;) )

I think this was the one I went to right after a 12 hour shift and still in my uniform. [face_laugh] I was so tired, but I had to see it! Definitely agree with JD Jedi the fight scene rocked! And with Liam...yeah who could go wrong with that?

Totally was worth the wait (if not only for the special effects)!
