Hal: Ok, I get the feeling I'm going to regret this, but... For those of us who find the most effective solution to a Rubik's cube is to, 'rearrange', the stickers... Why would that be impossible?

On the middle "slice" you have a green surrounded by 2 identical colours. Then you have the other green (on the near side middle) right next to those. That in itself is fine. But on the top "slice" you have the same situation with a green between 2 identical colours and an adjacent green to one of them. However, this is a reflection of the middle layer. This means (sticker swapping aside) that the cube cannot be completed.
