I thought she'd be going the way of J.D. Salinger. It's intriguing--though is there any other way to go but down?

I've never read To Kill a Mocking Bird, but I did just read the plot summary on wikipedia. It seems enjoyable, but that Boo Radley characters sounds like a total rip-off of the scary neighbour in Home Alone.

I assume that the vengeful spirit of the lynched black man returns to wreak his justified vengeance upon an unsuspecting populace in To Kill a Mockingbird 2: Mocking Back.

Yeah, but you at least remembered the name. The only character whose name I can remember is Atticus Finch. Also there was a ham costume at some point?

Finally read the article. It's pretty cool that it's about an adult Scout.

It's unusual in several respects: it's apparently her first, original novel starring an adult Scout before she decided to write TKAM and the complete manuscript was rediscovered, shocking even Lee.

So it's not so much the follow up to a great novel as its never before seen predecessor. That's bizarre. But it avoids the issue of a great author going downhill because it was her original attempt at a work, and it'll be released unaltered. Like a time capsule.

Even weirder is that Lee was asked if it was ok to release it as an ebook as well, and she allowed it though stating a preference for paper. Bizarre thing to have come up.

Sort of. This was her original book which had numerous flashback scenes to Scout's childhood. Her editor in the 50's persuaded her to write a book about Scout's younger days because he liked them so much. She did and we got To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee thought the original manuscript was lost but it was recently found and returned so she has tinkered with it for publication. It's apparently about an adult Scout visiting Atticus back in Maycombe during the mid 1950's during the height of the civil rights era.

PG: the stories I read says it was going to be unaltered -- is it being tinkered with for release?

So this new book may have some background issues dealing with Harper Lee's consent to this novel being published given Lee's health problems and the death of her sister, who had protected her from being exploited. YMMV with the Gawker network, but this Jezebel article raises some interesting points

I'm not informed enough to make a judgment either way. I know that Lee is reclusive but I don't know the circumstances that prompted her never to publish -- if it was aversion to attention or a dislike of what she produced.

The discovery thing certainly sounded miraculous and wonderful for the many who enjoyed TKAM, if concerning if it doesn't live up to the expectations. The added complication that it might be shady is troubling though.

I don't know whether to take the article and its source tweets at face value, but maybe somebody will dig into it.

Breaking news: J.J. Abrams has signed up to direct the film version, which will be a trilogy with the third film being split into two parts.
