Saga Has your preference changed?

I know this has probably been done before but it will be interesting to see how people's preference has changed.

So list the films in order of favourite

How do I know your preference has changed?

 

ROTS has very much moved up my list recently!!

 

My preference hasn't changed in the slightest, I still find thread topics posted in all caps very irritating.

 

I'm a lot less inclined to rank individual movies, it's all one saga to me now.

Yes, I admit I enjoy ROTS, ANH & TESB more than TPM, AOTC, ROTJ overall, but that's as far as I go with rankings now.

 

When I was a kid, my favorites were:

1. Return
2. IV
3. Empire

Now that I've grown up, my favorites are:

1. IV
2. Empire
3. Return
4. Revenge
5. Attack
6. Phantom

I object to the whole listing and ranking idea. It's all subjective and when people start debating it just leads to fanboy phallus measuring.

I like them ALL. Asking me to choose is like asking which of my children I like best.

 

I could quite easily rank my children!

As for the films

Hasn't really changed. TPM can go a bit higher depending on my mood.

I've been appreciating AOTC a lot over the last few years.

The order of the bottom five is subject to change depending on my mood. But ever since it came out, my top spot has never wavered.

Mine has changed. Once ROTS came out, my order became established as:
1) TESB
2) ANH
3) ROTJ/ROTS (tie)
4) AOTC
5) TPM

The change is that I now no longer rank them, and consider them to be equals... six "chapters" (episodes) of the Saga.

 

Jedi was my favorite of the trilogy when I was a kid until 18 or so, mostly because of the action in the film's second half. College and a little beyond I boarded the ESB train thanks to the more subtle conflicts Luke faces on Dagobah as well as the the overt strife towards the end of the film. These days, I'd probably either name AOTC or ROTS as my favorite. Love how both of these films deliver puply action, operatic spectacle, and, as Jedi_Ford_Prefect astutely expressed it over in the prequel forum, "articulations of an urban malaise." Beyond that I don't think I'm much for specific rankings these days.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s it was:

Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi (which I didn't care for at all)

Then with the PT interpolated it became:

A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace
Return of the Jedi

The top three were films I loved, the bottom three were films I didn't really care for.

These days, and largely as a result of the thoughts I have heard here it something like this:

A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back=Revenge of the Sith
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Return of the Jedi

But I also have come to the conclusion that they all have similar strengths and weaknesses and a lot of my love of the first two has to do with being a kid at the time they came out. The only ones that I can't come around to really liking these days are Attack of the Clones and Return of the Jedi, though they both have some great moments for me, they don't hold my interest like the others.

 

I like them all too, however I definitely enjoy some better than others. This doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the saga as a whole, it's just a preference (which hasn't really changed for me).

The only deviation would be my ranking of the original Star Wars. With every year, I grow more frustrated with its dearth of subtext and emotional depth, to such an extent that I prefer the more technically-flawed but rewarding TPM and AOTC.

I'm actually rather surprised by how low some people rate Star Wars. Maybe it's just me, but I am all about the "original" of things. Sure, it doesn't look as nice as the others, but it started it all, and that alone puts it high for me. Then when you add in how good of a movie it is by itself and how many great moments there are in it (best scene in the entirety of the six movies, to me, is Luke looking up at the twin suns), it cannot be beat (all in my own opinion, of course).

 

Hmm. I'm surprised. Your original order is very similar to mine. And to think, I thought my opinion always differed from yours.

 

I remember when I first saw the OT in 97 ESB was my least favourite. Probably cos I liked happy endings and space battles... I love ESB now though.

Yes, my original order does seem to be the same as yours, except that I ranked ROTJ and ROTS as a tie. Honestly, though, there were times when ROTS stood a good chance of moving ahead of ROTJ. But I really feel comfortable with my "no ranking" approach to the Saga now. And I'm sure we've agreed from time to time.
