From rebelscum.com and TFN's Collecting page:

Hasbro has announced in a recent press release that their licensing deal with Lucas Licensing Ltd. has been extended for an additional ten years. This means the production and distribution of Star Wars toys and games will remain under Hasbro control until at least 2018.

"Lucas and Hasbro have always viewed Star Wars as a long-term proposition. This extension truly gives us the opportunity to plan far into the future for the benefit of all the fans who have followed the saga for the last 27 years,"

The press release outlines some of the financial terms of the agreement and goes on to say that the "agreement with Lucas Licensing Ltd., continues to give Hasbro exclusive worldwide rights to core action figures, vehicles and games, electronic hand-held games, die cast vehicles and creative play products."

Is this good news? Bad news? Looks like the line has a much bigger future than any of us anticipated! Discuss!

    ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the words of Rick McCallum:
This is ******* grim. This is seriously grim!

I was hoping they would drop their license in 2008! I mean , Christ!
We won`t see any good Star Wars toys till
    2018?!!
    Hasbro will never change.
    Someone has to do something.
We have to stop that company from taking over the toy industry. But I guess it`s
    already too late. :( :( :( :( :( :(

I wish Kenner had never let the licensing go... what is the story with that anyway? Does anyone know why Lucasfilm switched from Kenner to Hasbro?

Didn't Hasbro shut down its Kenner division around 2000 or so?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Hasbro bought out Kenner, and eventually phased out the name.

I'm a little confused by your comments ?[face_plain]

You think they won't put out any good ones until the last second ?[face_plain]

I think that Hasbro has done a fine job with the license and has improved through the years.

I think the best part about this news is a hidden revalation that there will be more mainstream SW projects down the road. I mean I wouldn't think that Hasbro would of done this if they thought they are going to be limited to comic characters sold in specialty shops :D

Just because Star Wars toys and games will be under Hasbro control until 2018 does not mean they will necesarily be making them that long. It just means that no one else can make them until then. I think that maybe 2 years after Episode 3 comes out, the general public will loose interest (like they did ofter ROTJ). Hasbro may just start producing in very small numbers, or not at all. The quality may get worse as well.

I have a hard time believing that there will be Star Wars toys coming out for the next 17 years. There comes a point when you've made everything in every possible variant imaginable. I also believe that by 2008 most kids/collectors will have moved onto other things. The older collectors out there remember the years 1987-1995, a bleak time indeed for the Star Wars collector. I'm not downing Star Wars at all, I'm just speaking from past experience and past history. Time will tell.

    What I meant:
I loved Hasbro`s Star Wars franchise till
mid 2000. At that time I made an important step of collecting.
You see till the end of the Ep 1 line I collected everything even if I didn`t really
need it. For example I bought Tatooine Anakin and Pilot Anakin at the same day.

I made a " Do I really need those " experience. From that moment I cut back buying every single version of a figure we already got a million times.

    By 2018 we`ll probably have about 30-34
    Tatooine Luke`s. :(

I hope some of those Die-hard collectors
will soon have that experience too. :)

I hope that answers your question.

Wow. I can't see them making stuff that long. It would get to a point where only diehard collectors would still care.

But hey if they do we're assured to get every figure you could ever want. I'm betting on Yarael Poof and Yaddle by 2010.

Actually, we've had exactly one carded Tatooine Luke since before TPM was released. [face_plain]

Just because Star Wars toys and games will be under Hasbro control until 2018 does not mean they will necesarily be making them that long. It just means that no one else can make them until then.

Excellent point. I'm sure there can be a buyout of the license at some point, if the line starts to circle the drain after Ep. 3 has come and gone. But at least this is some additional security that both sides are committed to delivering Star Wars merchandise to the shelves - in one form or another - for a very long time. I also think we have a stronger and wider fanbase of collectors now than we did in 1985, when the vintage line died.

Re-read my post. I said "carded" figures.

Even with the speeder resculpt, we've only had 3 Tatooine Lukes in the past 4 years. I wonder how many Darth Mauls or Jango Fetts we've had in that time.

I wonder how many Darth Mauls or Jango Fetts we've had in that time.

    because I'm bored...

    Basic 3.75 Figures:
    Darth Maul - 6
(Jedi Duel, Sith Lord, Tatooine, Final Duel, Sith Apprentice, Sith Training)
Jango Fett - 4 (AOTC Preview, Kamino Escape, Final Battle, Slave 1 Pilot)

    Deluxe 3.75 Figures:
    Darth Maul - 2
(TPM Deluxe, with Sith Attack Droid)
Jango Fett - 2 (Snap-On Armor, upcoming Kamino)

    Other 3.75 Figures:
    Darth Maul - 5
(Tatooine Cinema Scene, Sith Speeder, with Sith Infiltrator, Sith Attack Speeder, Masters of the Dark Side)

    Total:
    Darth Maul - 13
    Jango Fett - 6

At first I thought Maul was winning, but spread out over time Jango's definitely ahead.

    For comparision...

Luke Skywalker - 9 (2 re-sculpt/paints, 4 basic carded) (Commtech with T-16, X-Wing Pilot, in Bacta Tank, Snowspeeder, 25th Anniversary, Bespin Duel, Landspeeder, Trash Compactor, upcoming ROTJ Jedi Knight)

...so looks not doing too poorly in reality. A few rehashes, and a little slack on the basic carded varieties...but then again he's not from a new movie.

Darc, did I not understand your post? Cause, did you forget to mention the Hoth Lukes? (regular, tauntan, wampa) or the Skiff luke, or the Rancor luke? Or were those repaints? Also Dagobah luke? Or, the Bespin Luke? (not saga, the FF version...)
