You know, a bunch of folks have recommended it to me I may even own it, from on of stream's free giveaways. But I've not actually played it yet. I shouldn't judge a game by graphics but it seems I've got a lot of reluctance to play graphically simplistic games unless they've got a lot of text in them instead.

    Play it. It's a fun rogue-alike. Graphics aren't everything.

I wasn't fond of the graphics on first glance either. I only played for about an hour, and likely only scratched the surface (I never even recruited anyone beyond my "boring human" crew mates), but within a few minutes I completely forgot about them. The game has a way of drawing you in.

My first career was cut short in an utterly embarrassing way, though. I come across a fairly well armed pirate ship assaulting some kind of space station. They don't want any trouble with me, and offer me a bribe if I'll just forget I saw them. I, however, am playing a respectable Federation captain, and therefore must insist on sticking my nose into everything. I dominate them early on, until I realize that I ran out of missiles (I don't know how to restock yet, nor do I know how to repair my hull, which was another big problem). Even without missiles, I manage to maintain the advantage. When they're mostly beaten, they contact me again, saying that they'll double their original offer if I would just let them go. I stubbornly refused, and ended up just running low on power. Perhaps if I was a more experienced player there was something I could do, but as it was I was scrambling to even stay alive. The pirates make a stunning come back, knocking out my shields, my surveillance so I'm completely blind, one of my crew members burns alive trying to put out the several fires that have sprung about on the ship, and so on. We both get to the point where we have no shields and about one bar of hull health... and they get the first blow. Game over.

I should have taken the damn bribe.

[face_mischief] You've only just begun to discover the evil that lies within FTL. That game will find the most elaborate, unbelievable ways to kill you. I recommend playing on normal difficulty only until you beaten the game at least once. Once you do that, you'll have a couple more ships unlocked and you'll be more ready to experiment with crew layouts and such. Until then, though, expect to die. A lot.

EDIT: I did also read an article where Evangeline Lily was asked about the whole love triangle plot in Smaug, and she says it wasn't in the original cut of the movie at all. She requested that they not put her in a love triangle, because she felt like it was a tired plot device when she did it on LOST, let along just jamming one into a well-known adaptation of a beloved book. But apparently the studio, not Peter Jackson, had other ideas. Remember when they got some additional scenes shot? They did all the scenes involving it then, at the studio's request, since they didn't feel like she was involved enough in the plot.

You'll also discover the delight of videogame cruelty potential when you learn that you get a lot more/better salvage by capturing enemy ships rather than destroying them. How do you capture the ship? Eliminate the enemy crew- by boarding, fire, asphyxiation, or just really good shots. Fun times abound.
