So, after the hundred year darkness the Dark Jedi were presumed to have not survived their exile (at least that was my understanding), however, is it possible that there could have been some contact between the Sith and the republic prior to the Sith re-emerging at the great hyperspace war?

The reason this came up, is that after a couple years, I decided to reread the fall of the Sith empire comics, and the general reaction to the warning Jori Daragon gives seems to be something like "oh the Sith, yeah, they're just a legend"... Like something that people tell to their kids to scare them. However, if the Sith were isolated to the Stygian caulderra until the hyperspace war, where did these "legends" come from?

    Any thoughts?

I think that there's other sources, suggesting the Republic knows about the Sith Empire, but didn't see it as a threat.

    Possibly West End Games sources.

After looking into the west end game leads, I didn't find anything that would really suggest that the republic knew about the Sith empire... In fact the tales of the Jedi companion says just the opposite. That the two lived in isolation and the republic was ignorant of the empire existence.

I did however find, that it may not completely have been the case, I did find a comic series "lost tribe of the Sith: spiral" which suggests that before even the omen crashed on kesh, that there was an earlier ship (s) that crashed there, containing one of the original dark Jedi exiles, after he left the empire to strike at the Jedi, and revealed the existence of the empire, but not its location. So i think I found my answer in those comics, that yes, the republic was"aware" of the empire, if only from old reports from the Jedi that crashed on kesh with Baron dreypa, but had no way of locating it.

I think he's talking about the background book, not the comic.

Full name: "Jedi vs Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force".

Thanks Iron_lord. I've forgotten the comic of the same name.
