I've heard that Sith is already raking in tons of cash from advance sales and midnight showings. I'm cautious but Sith could do major BO damage! :)

After seeing this movie I wish I could lower my box office numbers. This will do big on opening weekend, but it will NOT have good legs. The movie is very depressing and very dark. There won't be alot of repeat viewings of this movie, and I think it will struggle to get close to 300 million now.

I do tend to agree with that. People won't be running out again and again. But on the flip side, many people who normally might not go could be drawn in by the critical praise and good word of mouth.

A lack of repeat viewing may hurt this film. My estimate is probably high too.

The movie is very depressing and very dark. There won't be alot of repeat viewings...

Which is exactly what Lucas predicted would happen.

while it may not get repeat viewings from casual fans, if this film attracts the SW fans disappointed by I and II, it will do a ton of repeat business.

of course, i may change my mind after i see it at noon today. maybe it is too depressing.

the key is, do the fans walk out wanting to see it again?

teenage girls went to see Titanic multiple times and cried every time. maybe ROTS will elicit similar sentiments in boys and young men.

I think people walk out feeling empty. It's like a punch in the stomach. We know these characters so well, we've known them all our lives, and to see them beaten and hurt so badly is very personal.

I walked out feeling like I did NOT want to see this film again. I'm not saying it's not a good movie, it is very GOOD, what I am saying is I felt so depressed and empty that I had no desire to even use the ticket I have for the 7pm showing today.

I have convinced myself to go, but my wife is not going with me, one of my buddies is going. I'm hoping after seeing it again I will like it more, and want to see more repeat viewings.....but i have my doubts.

Well after seeing it a second time I LOVE the movie now. It is amazing how much better it was the second time around, and I think it is now my favorite of the entire saga.

On a box office note boxofficemojo is reporting that RoTS did $16.5 million in midnight showings alone!!! To put that in perspective AOTC did $7 million and the record was RoTK and it did $8 million. I think it now almost certain this film will break Spidermans opening day record!!

Hey DamonD is it possible to still get in predictions? I mean no numbers of any kind still come in. I thought the deadline would be when that happens since thats how you usually run the Predictions thread in JCC.

    Opening: $43 million
    3-Day Weekend: $110 million
    4-Day Weekend: $131 million
    US Total: $410-430 million
    International Total: $600-650 million
    Worldwide Total: $1.1 billion

Edit: Heh, I just noticed the posts about midnight estimates. So I'll understand if you say no...slightly disappointed but understanding!

Titanic didn't really leave you feeling depressed, though. It had a happy, feel-good ending (and a naked Kate Winslett!).

So, we have an Opening Day figure of $50,013,859!

That's a new Opening Day record, beating Spidey 2's $40.4m figure.
And that's also a new Single Day record, beating Shrek 2's $44.8m.

    Excellent start!

    Sweet! $50M. Star Wars Rules!!!

For everyone who said a depressing movie where you know what's going to happen etc. can't make a lot of repeat business, I have one word for you... Titanic.

I'm not saying this will be the number 1 movie of all time but the comparisons (tragic story, you know the end) are interesting to say the least.

did you read any of the reviews on that website? (box office mojo) THey are hilarious!!!

Gone is the snappy "walking carpet" tone and urgent "don't get cocky" pace; replaced by bad dialog dispatched in a low, neutral drone. Without contrast, lacking even Return of the Jedi's forest tranquility, The Phantom Menace's insistent score or Darth Maul's sense of purpose, there is not one memorable scene. A computerized planet is intended to look like Hell. It just looks fake.

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/reviews/?id=starwars3.htm

    and about hitchhiker's guide: ( http://www.boxofficemojo.com/reviews/?id=1801&p=.htm )

The robot, the president, the girl, the friend and Arthur band together to wander the cosmos, turning into vegetables and looking for a planet that may or may not exist. Add to all this such lessons as Don't Think, Man is Puny and Insignificant and rubbish about whales, mice and petunias and you have a drug-induced remake of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for Libertarians.

    lol!
