    I once thought that the aforementioned quote was one of the few outright lies told by the Dark Lord, as opposed to his normal modus operandi of deceiving with the truth. However, my wife and I were watching Revenge of the Sith last night, and it occurred to me that Lord Sidious was actually telling the truth!

    The two super-duper Sith powers that Darth Plagueis was supposed to have possessed were to (A) Influence the midi-chlorians to create life, and (B) Prevent others from dying. As far (A) goes, according to the New Essential Chronology, it's heavily implied that Sidious either knew enough about Plagueis' experiments to take up where he left off, or knew enough about Plagueis' experiments to figure out where the created "vergence in the Force" would be found. Either way, Darth Sidious would have to had considerable knowledge of what Darth Plagueis had begun.

    As far as the ability to stop someone from dying, Sidious exhibits this very power near the close of Revenge of the Sith. Now forgive me since I don't have my copy of the novelization at hand (it's packed in anticipation of my move next week), but as I recall, Sidious combines his own desire for Vader to live with the Apprentice's sheer rage and hate. This can also be seen in the movie when Sidious kneels over his Apprentice and touches him, presumably using the Force to heal Vader much as Obi-Wan does with Luke (albeit to a lesser extent) after the younger Skywalker's run-in with the Sandpeople.

    Also -and this is another book that's currently packed- the Locations of the Star Wars Saga (if that's the correct name of the book) indicates that the operating chamber where Vader was given his cybernetic parts was rife with all manner of Sith artifacts and alchemical implements. IIRC, Vader was even immersed either in the energies of a Sith focusing device or an alchemical bath of some sort several times during the course of the procedure.

    But what about the references throughout the novel Dark Lord, wherein Sidious muses about his quest for the ability to prevent oneself (as opposed to others) dying? According to Lord Sidious, "To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret." Who is that one? Might I suggest...

    From the Wookiepedia article:
    Sion was unique in that he would normally be dead if it weren't for the power of hatred embodied by the dark side and sheer force of will that held together his body, which was damaged to the point that it consisted of burned bits and pieces.

    Ironically, the power that Lord Sidious lusted after had been attained, albeit unconsciously, by another:

    Blinded by his own power and arrogance, Darth Sidious never realized that what he so desperately sought could have been his, had the Master been willing to learn from the Apprentice [face_thinking]

    I always figured Sids was talking about Plagueis there...but Sion makes a lot of sense as well...esp when you connect him with Anakin. I don't know if you're right or not, but it sounds intriuging to me. =D=

    Well,there's supposed to be a Plagueis novel coming out in 2008. Maybe we'll find out then if he really had that kind of power or not.

    "I always figured Sids was talking about Plagueis there"

    Yeah, that's the thing about Darth Sidious. You can never take what he says at face value [face_devil]

    The Plagueis book will entail it, no doubt. It will really be a Sidious book, the way the Vader book was a Starshone and co book, the way Jedi: Dooku was Jedi: Quinlin. ;)

    First off, Merkurian, lemme say that it's a very nice and ace theory, I like it :D I generally thought that Plaqueis was the one whom was imMuun to death, but I suppose a Sith Lord of yore might've also done the trick.

    The preview of Legacy #5 seems to suggest that there are two more candidates to whom Sidious might be referring to as cheating death. For your approval, I submit...

    [image=http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/7/77/AndeLeg.jpg]

    Darth Andeddu, who, when his body died, managed to use the force to keep it unified.

    [image=http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/9/97/KOTOR2Nihilus.jpg]

    Darth Nihilus, who escaped death by containing his consciousness within his armor.

    After feasting on that preview . . . Let me hear it again, those who would disdain the Legacy comics. [face_mischief]

    Yeah, I'm still basking in the afterglow of my nerdgasm after having read that preview :-B =P~

    Seems like Andeddu died in such as fashion that his Force ghost was able to "possess" his own corpse. I'm not too familiar with Nihilus though. I had him pegged as Galactus' "Mini Me." I'll have to look into it further...

    It sounds as if it was very much the same with Nihilus (and Sion for that matter)... all three seem to have been able to retain their consciousness in their mortal body after death. The big question: is this truly immortality? From a certain point of view, Sion, Nihilus and Andeddu were already dead. They're more like empty husks haunted by their own spirits.

    None of them seem truly immortal in the physical sense, Sion simply held his body together, Nihilus now seems to be the invisible man and Andeddu is virtually the same as Sion in that his body is already dead. They're all more- to draw on Andeddu's name- undead rather than immortal. They're all still alive, but none of them seem to have cheated death, their bodies all still died, even if their spirits didn't want to die until sometime later.

    Which begs the question, is there yet another who was truly immortal, whose body had never died or decayed?

    Another idea is that maybe Palpatine was being something of a wuss, and wanted to have immortality involving a process a bit less painful...

    Oh God, that preview... =P~

    Those are just their personality-imprinted Holocrons speaking, though, not the actual Dark Lords themselves, yes?

    Maybe, although if they were simly holocron gatekeepers, why would Krayt have to go all the way to Korriban to speak with them?

    EDIT: Speaking of Andeddu et al., here's a bit of silliness I also posted in another thread:

    Tired of that pearly white smile? Tired of not being feared by your minions because of that annoyingly perfect grill?

    If you want pearly-whites, check out Bane's smile in the same preview. (Especially the close-up frame of him berating Krayt).

    Those orbalisks must be pumping fluoride into his body...
