Hello Boyos!

Hello boyos! I am what you might call a newbie!!

On December 11, 2008, I took my first steps on an excursion to the furthest depths of cyberspace! Just the Jedi Council Forums, technically, but technicalities matter not. It's all space, or the space between spaces.

I am Qui-Gon Reborn, an amateur author, athiest, Independent, fencer, fifteen-year-old college student, The One They Warned You About, and song parody writer! Message board-er, too, I suppose, but what exactly constitutes a proficiency in that area?

Star Wars fan? Where did you ever get the idea that I was a Star Wars fan? What KOTOR figures? What autographed books? What posters? What did you say?! Obsessed?! I am...I am NOT obsessed!

Ahem. Talking to myself. There aren't any psychologists out there, are there? By the Force.

Soooo...I, QGR, wallow in an endless stream of sci-fi books, (Orson Scott Card, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Steven Gould, Alfred Bester, Ray Bradbury, Jack McDevitt, Frank Herbert, Roger MacBride Allen...did I miss anybody?) Norse/Greek/Roman history/mythology and...a little something called the galaxy far, far away.

I am a self-proclaimed Qui-Gon fanatic and a would-be expert on the Sith Era. Because of a somewhat unhealthy attatchment to writing, I've penned one too many fanfics, and have written ten too many Wookieepedia articles. I wafer through various Star Wars websites to constantly restore my love of living and preserve my sanity.

Well, with that somewhat uncoordinated greeting, I certainly hope you'll all enjoy what I've got to say on here. ("Say?" What constitutes speech? *groans* Not again...)

Hey, if you open your airlock in a ship that's in space, you'll explosively decompress. But what happens if you open the airlock while you're going through hyperspace? You explosively recompress?

I was skeptical about this at first, but posting is already fun!!

But now, it must end, at least for the time being. Lament in silence. I shall return!

I have found several trivia games, but I can't decide which one to participate in yet! And what with finals coming up, I don't really have a lot of time on my hands.

About the spamming, after I started posting, I looked at what I was doing and sort of said "Oops." I realize now what I should've done, and I won't do anything like that again. I sure hope I didn't turn anyone off toward me already. I won't do anything approaching spamming ever again.

And thanks for being so understanding; I've met mods on other sites that would have banned me without a second thought for infringing on any minor rule, even just a tad and as a newbie. Your kindness and helpfulness is wonderful. Thanks again!

 

Yes, well, I'm afraid I sort of have to wean myself of the defensive attitude born of having mods tell me, "We're not here to hold your hand while you learn the ropes. We won't help you because we really don't have to. Figure it out. Break the rules, and you're gone. That's. It." This is so different, and I'm trying to adapt!

And how do I sign up for that Master/Padawan type thing that I've read about?

 

The Master/Padawan thing you've read about is Newbie Adoptions, where older members volunteer to take newer ones under their wings and teach them the ways of the JC. If you check out the first page of that thread, you can get more details about it and post stating that you'd like to be adopted.

If I want to start a poll, like "Do you read the EU?" do I just go for it, or is there some procedure I have to follow?

 

Polls are a tricky subject, but I'll give you my take on it and let you decide what's best.

First and foremost, poll ideas should always be run by the moderator of the forum in which you wish to post it. Polls are a rare thing on many boards, and some moderators like to keep their forums clean of them. There's a whole board full of polls (which you've already found!) where they're usually kept for the entirety of the JC.

My second topic is the purpose. While anyone, with permission, can post a poll, it's a rare thing for a JCer to do. Personally, in all of my years here, I've never posted a poll. There's usually one already in existence somewhere on the JC, and otherwise, the responses are sometimes slim for other boards. I'd rather have a detailed conversation with someone and get better than a "yes" or "no" answer from ten people.

Does all that make sense? My opinion on the last part strictly, but the permission from the forum mod is essential above all else.

And these are the sorts of things that a master would be able to teach you and guide you in on the JC. I'd highly recommend getting adopted if you're into learning board culture in addition to the techniques of being on a message board and posting.
