This came from a whim after hearing this song at work, and I knew I had to write something about Anakin and Tahiri with it. I have no ownership of the song, no copyright infringement intended.

Tahiri Veila just wanted this day to be over. It never failed, every year this day would come again, and everything would remind her of that day, of that mission-

Of him.

Of the day he died.

I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet
She scratched at the scars on her forehead, and thought back to Yavin IV. She’d been taken by the Yuuzhan Vong and almost been shaped into one.

But he’d saved her.

Her best friend, Anakin Solo, swooped in and rescued her just before it was too late. He’d brought her back to herself, and probably saved countless lives in the process, but that’s not what mattered.

He came for her.

There's such a difference between us
And a million miles
And when the role flipped, and he needed her, she denied him in a selfish attempt to make sure he came back for it.

Hello from the other side
I must have called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I've tried
To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart
But it don't matter. It clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore
How she longed to see him again.

How she wished she’d at least kissed him goodbye.

Sometimes, she cursed him for being so reckless and getting himself injured, and then needing to play the damn hero-

It's so typical of me to talk about myself. I'm sorry
I hope that you're well
Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?
But then she’d catch herself being too selfish. She knew how vitally important that mission was, and that Anakin’s only focus was the success of the mission and keeping everyone alive.

Brash and headstrong, but loyal to a fault.

Another quality she’d loved about him.

And it's no secret that the both of us
Are running out of time
The galaxy could use more people like him. It was spinning more out of control on a daily basis at this point, with a full-blown civil war looming.

He would’ve fixed everything by this point, Tahiri thought.

A chime came from her door, indicating she had a guest. “Come in,” she called.

The door opened, revealing his brother, Jacen Solo. Jacen had also gone to Myrkr, and had been kidnapped by the Yuuzhan Vong himself after the success of the mission to kill the voxyn queen. He’d been someone she could commiserate with somewhat, though she felt that he had different intentions today. She knew he knew today was the anniversary.

Jacen smiled. “Hello, Tahiri…”

 

I always felt so bad for Tahiri, her life was so hard.

This is beautiful. Your story fits with the song very well, I can feel her feelings of loss from it.
I can very much feel Tahiri in this, it makes for a great character study.

Thanks mavjade! When I was first putting the idea down I'd originally intended for this to take place after FotJ and she'd go beyond shadows and to the Lake of Apparitions to see Anakin, and she'd let her body die and stay there. I knew that if that were to happen, though, that's it's not what Anakin would want, so I scrapped that idea, and worked this one out instead.
