I heard someone mention how Ben knows it's R2 at this point, I wasn't sure about that, but after watching it over a few times, I'm pretty sure that not only does Ben know this is his old droid, but what's on the message, and how to use it to lure luke away from tatooine.

R2 was never Ben's droid. In the PT he belonged to Padme.

Ach, R2D2 probably never met Obi-Wan before until the script for TPM was written (I'm not sure if he meets him in that either).

You people can't keep trying to make sense where there is none. These are movies, not reality, and many a thing will not fit.

Obi-Wan kinda meets him in TPM. He was present with Qui-Gon when the Queen commended R2 for fixing the hyperdrive. The only other time that Obi-Wan is shown near him onscreen is in AOTC when Anakin is about to escort Padme back to Naboo.

There are a lot of blue and white astromech droids in the GFFA, so I don't think Kenobi knew that Artoo was the same unit from Padme's personal staff.

I'm going to have to watch that again! I'm sure that I'll see the connection if I watch that scene another time. Great call!

I always took "Come here my little friend" as just sort of a friendly calling. Kind of like how you still act friendly to, say, a friend's dog even if it's the first time you've seen it, you know?

I agree. It was just a friendly greeting.

I have a feeling deep down that Obi-Wan did recognize Artoo, it would make plenty of sense.

Besides the entire story isn't know yet and perhaps they share scenes together in Episode III. Only time will tell...

What about the battle arena on Geonosis? Artoo and Obi Wan bonded deeply there!

Two great warriors in battle would never forget each other.

Look at OB1s expression when he says, "I don't remember owning a droid." Deep down I think he does recognise something about R2.

Hell yea, Obi knew it's R2!! I mean c'mon it's written on his body below his um... above the...to the side of that... Anyways it's there!

Unless Obi is losing his sight and can't tell blue from red and can't use the force to focus his pupils on the name tag, i'm sure he knew it was R2.

The real question is interesting. Since Chewbacca is in EP3, will Obi meet Chewbacca?? Did he know Chewbacca on Mos Eisly?

Another question is that even though they never show C3P0 with Obi in Ep2, does he know C3P0 as well? We'll see in Ep3!!

That means Obi knows every damn person in the galaxy including Boba Fett!!

That's a good point. IIRC Luke says "This droid claims to be the propery of Obi Wan Kenobie" or something like that. Ben responds and what he says is accurate. It's altogether possible Ben never owned a droid. Yet it does appear there is a spark of recognition but Ben can't quite place it.

I have been preaching that Obi-Wan and R2 are incahoots since day one. Only when EP III comes out will I find out if I'm wrong...

Maybe ben programmed R2 to somehow get to tatooine and then lure luke to him. And from a "certain point of view" mentally, ben didn't recognize R2 because that's not how he's presenting the idea to luke to leave and train to be a jedi.

WHOA!!! I didn't think of that either, how else would R2 have known WHERE to go in tatooine!! That's a Huge planet.

According to the radio drama version of ANH, Leia gives Artoo the coordinates of where to locate Obi-Wan on Tatooine right before she gives him the Death Star info. She was given the coordinates by Bail Organa before leaving Alderaan.

I don't really think there is a history between Artoo and Obi-Wan, but perhaps I'll be proven wrong in EpIII.

I think that's a safe bet. There is obviousley some connection. Whatever the answer is we'll find out in just over 16 months. :):)

It's always going to be impossible to tell unless we get some sort of clue in 3 like Obi saying something similar to R2.

I think that the reason R2 claimed he was Ben's droid was because the Princess told him to say that, that way it would be easier to get help finding him. That still doesn't mean there is no prior history.

Well, here's something to throw into the mix...perhaps Obi-Wan's friendliness with Artoo stems back to memories of other droids he has known...like, say, R4 in AOTC.

I always thought that R2 units were very common in a GFFA. Kinda like the Volkswagen in the 60's. Or a Toyota Corolla today.

Let's say that years from now you see the same make model and color of the car you own now. Would your first thought be "Hey that's my old car" or "I used to have a car like that"

The odds of seeing the exact car you owned are slim, although it could happen. (In a used car lot I once found a pickup that my grandpa once owned complete with the I'd rather be fishing license plate frame I had bought him one year for Christmas.) I know, I know never tell me the odds, but more than likely it is one of the thousands other cars of the same model, especially if you are in another city (or planet)

Ben may have been reminded of our hero R2 D2, but I think he had also seen thousands of R2 units over the years and didn't make the connection.

    Just my humble opinion

When you think about it, R2 and Obi-wan are the two most influential characters in the series.

    PT:
-Without R2, Anakin never would've participated in the Battle Of Naboo. Since it was his performance that convinced the Council he had to be trained, R2 is responsible for Anakin becoming a Jedi.

-Without Obi-Wan, Anakin would've never been trained as a Jedi, or for that matter, turned to the Dark Side.

-Without R2 being present in the droid factory, Padme would have died, thus preventing Luke and Leia from being born. No successful rebellion twenty years later as a result.
Without R2, Padme and Anakin would've received Obi-Wan's message from Geonosis much delayed, and never would've passed it on in time for the Jedi to send a rescue force there.

    OT
-Without R2, the Death Star plans would've presumably been recovered. Yavin would've been destroyed. End of story.
-Without R2, Luke never would've met Obi-Wan, so he never would've been trained as a Jedi.

-Without Obi-Wan, Luke would never have been given the training he needed for his eventual confrontation with Vader and the Emperor on the DSII. No hope for the galaxy.

-Without Obi-Wan, Luke would never have confronted Vader at Endor. He pushed Luke into it, remember? Thus, Obi-Wan is the precipitator of the downfall of the Empire.

Pretty impressive for an old man and a droid.

But no, I don't think Obi-Wan knew it was his old comrade in arms R2.

There have got to be plenty of identical R2 models around the galaxy, we have proof of that from TPM.

But when a Skywalker is involved, well, Obi-Wan just might have had his suspicions.
