When she held Cerys for the first time, Mara marvelled. She was absolutely perfect. Mara felt a pure protective tenderness swell inside.
Luke and she had started a family. She had scarcely dared believe they would wind up together, much less ...
She thought she'd feel uncertain and unprepared to be maternal.
Now, even though she had to learn by doing, as all parents did, Mara knew she was more than ready.
Nothing could touch this moment.

"Getting sappy on me, Mara?" Luke asked, entering with a stuffed Ewok. "This was Jaina's. She insisted it go to Cerys."

"Without her parents' coaxing?" Mara teased.

"No, it really was her idea." He grinned.

Mara remarked:
"And to answer your initial question, I'm not getting sappy. Nor will I.. I'm feeling exactly what any other mother would feel I'm sure."

Luke gazed upon his wife and daughter as one besotted and befuddled by affection.

"You're the one who's feeling sappy." Mara gibed.

"Hey! I proudly admit I'm a hopeless romantic." He made faces as Cerys opened her eyes and focused on Luke.

"Luke! You'll scare her."

Luke proceeded to talk 'baby talk' and make even funnier faces. Cerys smiled and yawned and burrowed back into Mara's embrace.

Mara smirked. She may be Daddy's little girl, eventually, but not yet.

Luke suggested:
"You rest, Mara. I'll hold her until she needs a feeding."

Mara handed her over, knowing Luke had practice with newborns from his sister's younglings.

Now Cerys gazed up at Luke with her blue-green eyes and gurgled.

Traitor. Mara thought and yet couldn't quite squelch her sense of joy at the picture the two of them made.

Oh, no. she thought. Was she getting soft?

She had a feeling it was too late, already.
