Hey Ender,
Does every American you encounter try and do an Aussie accent and say something cliche' like "throw another shrimp on the barbie" or "a dingo ate my baby?"

 

Most Americans we encounter are more like " Oh my gaad, you guys have like running water..and electric lights....just like home..."

Well there's plenty of other recent examples: Adam Goodes (not to mention the, frankly, shoehorned promotion run by David Jones), perpetuated issues concerning asylum seekers, and paranoia from rural Australians concerning Asian property investment don't exactly testify cultural progression more than they do the rehashing of an old tape. I'm surprised Pauline Hanson hasn't been making front page more often concerning the latter. I'm not casting a personal opinion on whether these are valid or pertinent issues of race in Australia, but discussion forums including Q&A have been using the aforementioned topics as the focal point for their discussions when concerning race and national identity in Australia.

Downey Jr (in Tropic Thunder, not Natural Born Killers) and Kevin Kline in Fierce Creatures do a pretty good Australian accents, but they still botch up some vowel (most "a") sounds. Meryl Streep got closest, but occasionally goes Kiwi on some of the vowels in this clip:

Val Kilmer did a pretty decent Aussie accent in The Saint.
