HIGH POINT - The sense of anticipation for "Revenge of the Sith" was so great Wednesday morning it could be cut with a light saber.


By 11:30 Wednesday night, High Point Police estimated 1,200 were waiting in line at High Point's Palladium.

Loyal "Star Wars" fans awaiting the final chapter in George Lucas' prequel trilogy began lining up outside the Palladium at 8 p.m. on Tuesday - 28 hours before the initial midnight showing.

Among them were three Triad residents set to claim a somewhat obscure title, first in line. They are Vinnie Mannino, David Hill and Joel Steding.

During the premieres of Episodes I and II, the three attended showings in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. When the original special editions were released in 1997, the three saw the movies on their opening day.

Getting in line 28 hours early was symbolic for another reason. The three were all born in 1977, when "Episode IV - A New Hope" premiered, also making them each 28 years old.

The three were joined Tuesday night by another group of dedicated fans, including Nicole Krasowski and her 5-year-old daughter Madeline. Krasowski said she wanted her daughter to share in the line-up experience she enjoyed in 1977.

"You instantly feel like you know everyone here," Krasowski said. "You talk and you reminisce. It's like a family reunion with people you didn't even know but you have this connection."

Those waiting in line had all the amenities for the wait, including a television and DVD player to watch each released episode, vintage and new light sabers, Star Wars Trivial Pursuit and C-3P0 and Chewbacca action figures.

Mannino, Hill and Steding estimated they had a collective total of four hours sleep Tuesday night.

On Wednesday morning, Palladium Manager Ben Horne brought them doughnuts - refreshments from a night that included lengthy radio and television interviews by area TV and radio stations.

As they stood under sunny morning skies Wednesday, they sensed their line-up goals might have had some outside help in keeping their endurance.

"We haven't had rain for any of the three movies. The force must be with us," Mannino said.
