Hot topic!!- Games being held on Holidays?

Holiday games are profitable for both leagues and networks because more people are available to either watch or attend. Many people like games on holidays because it gives them a reason to gather with family or friends and make an occasion of it.

Australia has many sporting events on holidays. Australia Day - January 26 (Used to be a Cricket Test Match, now its just a one dayer), ANZAC Day - 25 April (Essendon vs. Collingwood AFL match), Queens Birthday (Melbourne vs. Collingwood AFL Match), Boxing Day (Melbourne Test Match).

When it gets a bit tricky is when matches on holidays coincide with a solemn occasion. However, as long as they pay respect for that occasion (such as the minutes silence and last post on ANZAC day) it shouldn't be a problem.

In the end, we allow almost everything else to be open and providing services (such as cinemas, supermarkets, petrol stations etc.), why should sporting events be any different?

 

Yeah, I think so. There are so many levels games can be watched during the holidays. To some families, it's not the Holidays until you have a football game on in the background. Even if you're not watching it, just to have it there is a reassuring feeling. Very weird.

 

I feel bad for the NBA teams that have to play on Christmas day.
