it appears it is not protect by anything during normal flight on an X-Wing but when you are going at or faster than the speed of light how can it stay in one peice?

the same goes for entering a planet's atmosphere. wouldn't its circuits and gears fry?

Well, flying through space, it seems to me there wouldn't be wind resistance or anything...

As for reentry, perhaps the shields help.

The same things that keep the ship itself safe keep the Astromech safe.

    Not to mention the pilot.

I'd imagine they were designed to withstand space and re-entry as that's what they were built for ;)
Even in TPM we see that they have magnetic feet for vacuume repairs. Handy lil devils!

Astromech droids can survive hyperspace travel for the same reason there is sound in space...Science Fiction Rules! Woo!
