Do you think LOTR and Harry Potter helped make fantasy mainstream which in turn led to the success of GOT?

Can something like this happen to the space opera genre?

Will Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy do for space opera what LOTR and Harry Potter did for fantasy?

I'm not sure I'd call fantasy mainstream yet, although ROTK's Best Picture win suggests it's headed in that direction. It is less stigmatized than it used to be, though. I wonder if it's not because of the fantasy content of video games, which are now the kind of thing that "everybody" plays. Once the idea of dragons and wizards becomes familiar to you, it becomes palatable, even "normal."

    It didn't and hasn't.

That aside, though, "How did [. . .] became" is the most interesting contortion of the English language since "How do we supposed to."

Not really. My library shelves Neil Gaiman with the mainstream novels because he's considered a "real" author. Ditto with "magic realism" authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and on occasion Toni Morrison. Speculative fiction is still a kind of ghetto, but it's gentrifying.

Definitely. Lord of the Rings won 17 Oscars and the Harry Potter books were turned into a string of billion dollar global hits.

You can argue that it already has. People sometimes forget that Star Wars was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and won seven of its nominations. The critical and financial success of Star Wars convinced Paramount to commit to the Star Trek film franchise.
