How did Indy get in the Sub?

In ROTLA, how did Indy get inside the Nazi Sub without being detected? This has been bugging me for years! Yes, I know that it is pulp / serial fiction ... but I demand an explanation!

 

Indy didn't get in the Sub because the Sub never dived under the water, so he stayed on top of it.

 

Is that an assumption, or Indy Canon?

 

The novelization for Raiders (which is collected in the just-released The Adventures of Indiana Jones) has it where he rode the sub by holding on to the periscope.

 

Indy Canon. He tied himself to the periscope with his whip.

 

Underwater or above water? I know he's good, but breathing underwater could be a problem.

 

The sub stayed above water for the trip. I guess that island wasn't too far away.

 

I hope he brought sunscreen...sheesh.

As Hitchcock used to say when someone asked him an annoyingly logical and sensible question regarding something in his films, "my dear boy, it's only a movie."

 

A movie? I thought it was a documentary!

 

And it takes place in real-time as well.

 

He didn't get in the sub. It was all a dream. The movie made it clear.

 

Read the script it answers your question... Hey, WAIT! I'll answer your question! In the script Indy lashes himself to the sub with his whip and when the sub dives he survives by using his jacket to create an air pocket that he could breathe in underwater. The air pocket idea was later used in the Venice sewers in Last Crusade. Woulda been cool in Raiders though.

 

I didn't write the movie.

 

I watched ROTLA last night, and this thought occured to me too. The thing with the idea he never did get in the sub is that according to the map you see of the sub progress, it seems to go quite a way.

Perhaps he didn't get in the Sub, and Indy died.

Then they all appeared on the LOST island in purgatory. The spirits at the end aren't evil, they are just being released from purgatory into Heaven.

It all fits. JJ Abrams / Lucas / Spielberg worked this all out years ago.

 

The Indiana Jones Handbook (which should be out now) has an illustration that shows how Indy tied himself to the sub's pierscope with his bullwhip. Highly recommended reading material.
