I'm working on a sequence for my fanfilm & i need to have a Tie fighter badly damaged so it will crash land on a planet.

The sequence will be CG using Lightwave 7.5

Now my question is not how a create such effects(although i could use some tips) but what effects should i use...

I was simply going to have fire coming from the back of the Tie but then remembered that there is no air in space so there would be no flames :(

    Any suggestions?

Hope my wittering made sense :D

    Mushi ;)

You can have sparks flying from the TIE. :D

Well, there's no sound in space either, but that makes things awfully boring. :)

Take a look at the OT. There are a lot of examples of damaged TIEs flying around...

you could warp/bend/twist the metal and stuff to show damage. And kinda have a glowing trail of something that he is leaking perhaps.

Original Trilogy, in this case, not Off-Topic. Anyhow, the classic is to break a wing off and set the other half spinning. And sparks arching from the broken wing emplacement(sp?).
The other is to leave the TIE intact and make an electrical bolt waver across its surface while spinning and then exploding.
Another is to set fire to the ball cockpit which is quite effective.
And for the grand finale: Just make the damn thing explode for pete's sake! :D

Use these wisely, and remember to administer the right sort of death accordingly, for example, you can't have a TIE set on fire because of turbolaser fire or a multiple laser shot. A quad burst from an X-Wing or a cap. ship turbolaser would blow it up instantly.
The other options are for when the TIE suffers a light hit or is just scraped by the laser, so to say. They can also be used when a TIE chips on something.

Fire trails are fine. Remember, the pilot will be human in all likelihood and therefore the Tie would have to carry a supply of oxygen. Leakage would enable the fire.

Apart from all the science though, if you need to use a bit of artistic license, go for it, it's really not that important.

actually, ties have no life support systems, that why the pilots have all that gear on,self contained life support....but just pretend I didnt say that ;)

The OT had ANH, ESB, and ROTJ. The PT had TPM and AOTC. Currently the rest of the PT is on the QT. You should learn this PDQ. Got it?

What you need is the CPC or the LCP but keep it on the QT you know what i mean.

Personally, I like to use "HT" instead of "OT". "HT" for "Holy Trilogy", after what the Star Wars saga was called in "Chasing Amy". ;)

9 would most probably be a nonegy.
    11 - Endecodgy
    12 - dodecogy

Would James Bond be a polyogy then?

    I think six is sexology.

Or have I just revealed one too many layers?

As for answers to your question, see above. :p

Someone above suggested exactly what I would've suggested...have a few bolts of electricity covering the TIE so it looks like it's engines are shorting out or something.

foxbatkllr: How dare you bring this thread back OT?

In this case, OT = ON topic. Just want to keep things confusing, you know?

I think i'll try the electric bolt thingy.

Should i render the animation or the Tie & appy the lightning effect in After Effects?
