Why “best” is actually the worst

It’s time to stop using “best.” The most succinct of e-mail signoffs, it seems harmless enough, appropriate for anyone with whom you might communicate. Best is safe, inoffensive. It’s also become completely and unnecessarily ubiquitous. That development is relatively recent: A University of Pennsylvania study from 2003 found that, out of hundreds of e-mailers, only 5 percent opted to close with best. It came in behind “thank you” and “regards.” But a quick search through your work account will quickly clear up two things: 1) No one says regards anymore; 2) everyone says best.

When e-mail first entered the office in the 1990s, most users wanted to abandon the formalities of letter writing altogether, so they omitted signoffs. “There was no salutation and no closing,” says Barbara Pachter, a business etiquette coach. “It was like a memo.” In a Los Angeles Times article from that era, Neil Smelser, a sociologist from the University of California at Berkeley, predicted that the rise of electronic communication would ultimately kill off the written goodbye altogether.

"Cheers, Yvette" or "Kind regards, Yvette", depending how 'professional' I need to be or how much I like/dislike the person I am emailing.

Unless it is to JediFarfy, then it is "OMP I MISS YOU SO MUCH OKAY BYE" and to family it is "Love, Yvette."

LOL, I have one of those for work. Personal ones I just end with my first name.

And my devices end them with "sent from my iPhone" or "sent from my iPad".

Back when I was like, working for real and stuff, it was with "Sincerely," just as if it were on a real letter.

Now I generally don't sign e-mails at all, unless I'm unsure if the recipient knows who I am. Then I'll either type my full name into a signature position, or else put it in the subject line in parentheses (so they know it isn't spam).

    I'm fully a British-adopter now, so:

    Regards,
    <name>

<required email signature block with title / contact>

I'm not super-high management, so I'm not quite to "Faithfully yours" yet.

Most of my work emails end in, "Thanks so much!" and then just my first name, but most of those involve scheduling details that go to and from people who know me. I hardly every have ocassion to send an email with my full name and credentals, sadly. (I guess I could end work emails with them, but then my coworkers would never stop picking on me, and they have enough material to do that with as it is.)

If I'm sending an email from my personal email, the vast majority of the time it's to someone I know very well so I don't sign it with anything. I might put a 'See you soon!' , 'Love you!' or something along those lines depending on who it is and why I'm emailing them.

If I am sending a formal email, I usually go with sincerely.

I came *this* close to actually pasting my email signature here, but it has my work phone number and email address, etc. and I feared the worst from you people so I didn't.

    "Groeten".

When I write emails in English, I always end with "kind regards", but lately I get the feeling that that's really old-fashioned. Is it?

Followed by my name and my cool logo.

"Best regards," followed by a line break and my first name only. I'm never kind or sincere.

I work for a Swiss company with many branches in Europe, so I follow the herd and end with "Best regards."
