In fact, how Rogue Starbuck says it is à la Française / in French is correct. And I'm quite sure of that... (For those who doesn't know it... I'm French...)

    Thanks, Prince :D

I believe a church caretaker is sometimes called a "Verger". How that is pronounced is like I tried to show on page 1. I think :)

I always thought it to be "ver-ger-eh"

And let's keep in mind that this words doesn't have to follow english pronounciation rules.. or that of any other nation.

It could be something completely different for all we know.

I'm probably wrong (terrible with pronounciations) but I always went with the "e" at the end as being silent and just being there to make the name fancy and said it as "Verger" (rhymes with "merger")

Hum, well, sorry Rogue, but I thought about it again, and there's a slight pronounciation nuance that makes your vir-jer not à la française... (I made the mistake of saying it was right because I misspronounced virgin in my head...)

In fact, it's hard to tell how it would be pronounced in English because the way the 'e' is pronounced has no real equivalent, I think. But the closest I can think of would be as you pronounce the 'e' of get, but a bit deeper (got what I mean here ? I'm not sure this is the appropriate term). So Vergere is pronounced in French : "ver" (the 'e' as in 'get', but deeper) - "jer" (like jerry, but pronounced with a 'g' instead of a 'j' at the beginning, and again, the 'e' like in get, but deeper). The final 'e' is silent.

"I believe a church caretaker is sometimes called a "Verger". How that is pronounced is like I tried to show on page 1. I think"

You mean in French ? If yes, then a "Verger"'s an orchard and would be pronounced like Vergere, except that' you'd replace the 'er' of "jer" with and 'ei' like in 'eight'.

But again, there's no real equivalent in English, so it's hard to explain, and my explanations will probably make it sound wrong... I dunno.

    Exactly.

Maybe Del Ray or Lucasfilm could put one online.

*scratches head* Now I'm confused. The only way to have closure on this is to ask James Luceno (or any other SW author) how it is pronounced.

Either that, or we continue to pronounce it how we personally think it is pronounced, when we are reading. :D

PS - I still think the 'e' is silent :)

Personally I pronounce it in English (sort of), since I read the books in English. But we all have our personal way of pronouncing it, so it's fine for me. But it's always interesting to see how people pronounce 'alien' things.

(And if I did all that stuff about Vergere in French, that was because some people were apparently 'interested' in that subject. But as I said, I don't pronounce it that way.)

On the Rogue Planet audio book, it was pronounced:

Vair Gair, kind of in a French way. Vair, Gaaair. Vergere.
