I see that there will not be an America because just like the Dinosaurs, Egyptians, Apache, Spainards, and others, their eras ended. I read some where that in Russia they are going to start trying to build flying cars,so who knows maybe in 50 yrs.Star Wars might actually be real.I might be dead or not I'll be 63 and my Star Wars fantasy life will be come true.If not I'll be dead and watching it grow. But only God knows the answers to life.

I think the world will be a much better place for my children (When i have them) and their children.

Something has gotta give. wars don't work, maybe we'll give peace a shot. it's the only thing we havent tried yet.

50 years is a long time to see things change, but I think we'll be better off

lets hope I dont eat those words

Can't anyone be optimistic in this thread?

    why would we?

If you look at the world's current situation it's hardly to think optimistic about it.

And no GAP I've not seen to much SF...

Earth would have been hit in 2019 by the asteroid 2002 NT7 having coursed major damage after several attempts in stopping it.

They already ruled out all possibility of this impact. Sorry. :p

If we continue at the current rate, then there is no denying that the following will be so:

All natural resources will be depleted. Desertification will spread over central asia, north and south africa, and north and south america, causing such extreme famine and shortage of water that the no longer developed nations of the west will be unable to provide relief, and there will be a mas migration towards the oceans. The ice caps will continue to melt, further raising the water level and drowning many major cities.

The lack of natural resources will make flying and driving virtually impossible, and govornments will break up. There will undoubtedly be several nuclear accidents, and terrorism will be of no concern seeing as there will be no infrastructure or religion to attack. Crops will fail worldwide as tempuratures rise during the summer and water is made unavailable. Wars will be fought over water and usable pastures, but not with guns, because there will be no mining for powder of production of bullets.

AIDS and other epidemics will spread across the world, most notably in Africa, reducing the life expectancy back into the thirties at best. Religion will be of no concern to people. The majority of the world's population will live in wretched and sprawling shantytowns which extend up and down every coastline. The buildings, made out of plastic and foam, like the ones in the Phillipeans, will make up the cities. The cities will be extremely overcowded and polluted beyond belief, with people dying in the rivers of mud, trash, and feces which make up the roads. The cities will be battered by extreme storms in the wintertime, blowing down the towns, which are baked to a crisp in the relentless suns of summer. The towns will be forever pushed to higher ground by the rising ocean levels.

Mass migrations of people will move over the desert continents on bicycles or pushing wheel barrows, searching for the better conditions of the wretched shantytowns of the coast. Electricity? Sewage? Technology? No longer will they be words used in the language. People will forget that water can be clear or food green. The air will be practically unbreathable because of the deadly buildup of greenhouse gasses, holes in the ozone layer, and lack of trees and nature. Then will come the great dying, as almost all of the overpopulated cities collapse and the people die by the millions. A few fortunate ones who have havens in the far north or on New Zealand may survive, but not many.

Of course, people could be smart and not continue to ruin the planet, but what are the chances of that happening?

First of all, people who are hoping that our children will make things better need to step back and take a look... WHO IS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? WE ARE!

    *ahem*

As for the state of the planet, this is what I foresee... *puts on a big turban and a purples cape, holding an envelope to his forehead*

The USA will begin to crumble, as it's power has increased exponentially, and it's decline will come just as fast, if not faster. Osama Bin Laden will be dead, not by execution, but by old age because he will have become old news by 2005. The war on terrorism will be just as successful as the Korean War and the Vietnam war. Japan will rise to become the biggest super power, casting a daunting shadow on the USA.

    Reallybigshoo. Reallybig.

    Let's ask Roger Waters!

Anyway, here's MY opinion. I'll have to wait for Roger Waters to reply with a bunch of big words and stuff.

I think G Rated films will have every cuss word up to the "F" word, will show the penis, breasts and vagina, and have lots of gory killing and blood.

The new GnR album won't be out yet. But don't worry, it's coming!

Guns will be alowed in school, every kid will have one, it'll be the new trend. If you don't have one you're part of the "Out" crowd. Or the dead crowd

4 year olds will try to "Have sex."

Led Zeppelin IV will still be selling four thousand to five thousand copies in the U.S.

Everyone will weigh over 200 lb's and have dentures by age 15.

Jimmy Page might be dead, God forbid--Oops, there is no "God" in the future, never mind.

There will be no such thing as "Rock" "Grundge" "Blues" and "Jazz"

Kids will be smoking by at least 8 years old.

Led Zeppelin will reunite. "Ladies and gentlemen, David Coverdale, James Patrick Page II, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham!"

Cocaine, heroin and marijuana will be available at your local Wal-Mart.

Neds and Townies will kill, get pregnant and raise more of their kind and everyone will be the same, look the same, act the same, listen to the same music and be egocentric "Hardcore" people.

Star Wars will be re-released as a new boxed set and every movie will be over 8 hours long.

You guys are way too pesimistic. It is a strange thing to say, but I think HH is the most right, I just disagree as to the extent of globalization and a pure totalitarian government. I think that in the future the US will become too free and what are crimes now will be common practice. Drugs and sex use will be rampant, and as a result China will begin to overcome the US economically, the EU will strengthen, but remain in the same reletive postion overall.

In the future there will be wars and rumors of wars, and various bad things going on, but the US will try and hold to freedom.

And as for living in a world without weapons,

HavocHound it is impossible to live in a world without weapons, your hand is a weapon, a rock could be used as a weapon.

    It's just impossible...

The planet hopes that you are correct. The way things are going with depletion of natural resources, pollution, and world conflict, I could see this as a real possibility. In fact, I subscribe to the theory that 2012 may very well be "our" last year in existence here.

Keep in mind when you talk about economics that mineral resources don't grow on trees. For example, the US' supply of the metal columbium, used as an additive in steel and superalloys, is controlled by Brazil, Canada, Germany, and Russia, mainly the first two. We also depend on foreign countries for arsenic, bauxite, bismuth, graphite, manganese, strontium, thallium, thorium, and sheet mica.

Of course other countries have similar dependencies, they're just not in my almanac. Just something to keep in mind about who is economically shutting out whom.

well, 50 years from now, life on Earth will not be sustainable.

Given population growth trends, and consumption habits of people, the Earth's resources will be gone in a few decades.

A nuclear war, meteorite, etc., is not necessary.

These are facts that come from articles I've lost, so you optimists don't have to beleive me.

    EDIT:

Without contolled population, a healthy environment is moot. On a filty planet, peace of any extent is moot. When people are always bickering, It doesn't matter whether you're rich or not.

    I wonder:
If you have young children at home, what do you think of when you look at them?
And rising adults just want to have lots of babies?

I keep hearing about how today's kids are going to save the world some day. Obviously not today because many kids litter.

And a note to those people who are trying to be as optimistic as possible:
I enjoy the moment, but pessimism is good. It gets people to think more critically about the future and take it more seriously.

Your predictions on the future of smoking are absurd. Teen smoking was more rampant in the 50's and 60's than today. Have any of you ever seen a movie taking place during those years? Smoking wasn't seen as much of a bad thing then. That doesn't mean some of today's teens don't pick up cigarettes but it's not as much as a problem now.

However, I am pessimistic about global warming.

    POLITICAL
The United States will still be the most powerful individual nation on Earth.
India will be a power on par with the United States, Europe, and Russia, assuming there is no nuclear exchange with Pakistan.
One episode of terrorism involving a weapon of mass destruction may have occurred, probably within the United States or Israel.
    China will be a democracy.
A Palestinian state will exist alongside Israel.
Africa will continue to be a continent plagued by civil strife and economic under-development.

    TECHNOLOGY
A crude form of nanotechnology will exist and will be used in manufacturing and in the medical field.
Aerospace planes able to take off and land from runways will be able to reach low-Earth orbit. Middle-class people will be able to afford short vacations to orbiting resort stations. Numerous space probes will be in orbit around and on the surface of the Moon, Mars, and other worlds in our solar system.
AIDS will be treatable with somatic cell gene therapy, as will many forms of cancer and several inherited diseases.
Computers with a crude form of artificial intelligence will be commonplace.
Practical robotics will be an emerging technology.
Automobiles will still use fossil fuels, but they will be much more fuel efficient.

    ENVIRONMENTAL
The theory of global warming will have become largely discredited.
Some extinct species will be recovered through the use of biotechnology.
Nuclear fusion may offer a practical alternative to environmentally adverse energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear fission, and to ineffective energy sources such as solar cells and windmills.

    ECONOMIC
A NAFTA-style free trade zone will encompass most of the world.
Paper money and coins will be rare; electronic funds transfer will be ubiquitous.
Socialistic economies will have been supplanted, to a large degree, by free market capitalistic economies.
Major economic blocs: North, Central, and South America (including Cuba); Europe (including Russia); India; Asia (including Australia and New Zealand).

    Alright, here's something else...

With all this talk of microchips in people, it really got me to thinking that there will be a biological tool or medical "Breakthrough" that everyone will have and will backfire on everyone and we'll be messed up big time. Or the millions of people who use it will have these weird-ass alien kids and in fifty years, after all this, the "Human" as we know it today will be extinct, replaced by what we created within ourselves :(

Hell, probably a new cosmetic thing will cause that! The search for bigger breasts how to be the sluttiest chick on the block techniques might just go a little too far ;)

And also maybe even a scientific breakthrough that will blow up or something or 'cause a gas leak or whatever turns everybody into screwed up alien-things :(

But the corrupted and money/power hungry tyrant will always be the 'cause of all of this, yes. Or a scientist who thinks he's helping people but just making things worse.
