for instance, when luke says something like "we're going to the degobah system" they land on degabah.

this is probably a dumb question but is the star also called degobah? how does that whole thing work with the star/planet systems?

It appears they call a solar system in the GFFA by the name of its principal world. If they visited us they might call this the Earth System for example.

In reality we name a system by the name given its star. We might call ourselves members of the Sol System, we call our nearest neighbors the Alpha Centauri system, since two of its three stars are Alpha Centauri A and B.

Sometimes they are named after people, too.

    Leia - "Lando system?" ;)

Sometimes a star and its major planet share a name, IE Dagobah system, sometimes its similar but different, IE Tatooine is in the Tatoo system, or sometimes their totally different IE Ossus is in the Adega system, meanig the planet Ossus revolves aroun the star Adega.

And then there's the whole Endor/forest moon debate.

Maybe they decided to simplify matters by simply not naming the stars?

For the love of all that is good and holy, don't get me started on that again! [face_laugh]

As for naming systems for planets..it's as reasonable as our system.
