Another option...learn to live very simply, and enjoy doing it. Then retire and move to a developing country that intrigues you, and live indefinitely off of your life savings. As for the OP question...just far enough to retire from it. :p

No more than 10 miles. Otherwise, you would be working for Big Oil.

I moved from Florida (ew) to Washington, DC for my job. I would prefer to be above the Mason-Dixon line but it is better than Florida.

I am the executor of my mother's estate, so I'm not planning on leaving the Des Moines area. Even then, it would take a lot for me to relocate from here, I like this place too much.

My work radius is 90 minutes travel. Any more, and the employer needs to pay for travel and accommodations.

A big part of my job involves travel, which I actually love...except Atlantic City. **** that place. Anyway our headquarters are 20 minutes from my house, so that's kind of awesome.

Oh and we're expecting more sub-zero temperatures here next week...but I'll be in Las Vegas. Ha!

Commuting daily is different than travelling/moving, people.

I wouldn't mind working in NYC and having my own private jet, but that'll never ever happen.

    ?

I would have few qualms with moving practically anywhere if it it was for a great position that could help me further my own goals, regardless of the salary. I'll go to Tasmania or Greenland or wherever; it doesn't matter. On the other hand I really hate having to commute to and from work, since I'll probably be unable to drive until we eventually get self-driving cars (and I can actually afford them, which is... probably not soon), so unless it's in a place that has really good public transit I don't want to work somewhere more than a few miles from where I live if I can help it.

After 2 years on the dole queue post-graduation I was told I had to accept a job 350 miles away or starve. It was in a McDonalds.

    Work is work.
Although given the staff turnover of companies like McDonalds I'm surprised you were offered one 350miles away and not down the road.

30 minutes is it for me. I've had opportunities with B&N I have turned down over the years. I'm glad I was patient. Some guy doing the same job I have now was driving an hour and a half. They guy I took over for was offered his own store to manage also an hour and a half away. I would move my ass.

I'd be willing to move for a good job, especially if it were in a place I'd want to live anyway, but I'd define good as something other than just high-paying. It would have to be a job rewarding or interesting enough to justify the stress of moving, I think. (Not that I'd complain about a salary bump, though.)

My employer is in the process of moving a number of its jobs in my region to cheaper parts of the country. No word on my position yet, but I might have to decide about relocating at some point in the future.

Every day? Wowza. I've known people who commute weekly, going home for the weekend but staying in a cheap place near their job during the week, but I've never before heard of a daily plane commute.

And, as sj mentions, she must have been independently wealthy or something. Even if she was commuting between two hubs and the fare was relatively cheap, that commute must've eaten up most of her paycheck.

[Y'all like how I made this post half about relocating and half about commuting so it's relevant to both the old and new parts of the thread?]
