CT How had Yoda been watching Luke?

In Empire Strikes Back Yoda comments "This one a long time have I watched. All his life as he looked to the future, to the horizon, never his mind on where he was! What he was doing!" (Likely not an exact quote)

So my question is... by what medium could Yoda watch over Luke? I know after becoming one with the force some Jedi have this ability, but how is that possible when still alive? Is it a similar connection to the force that caused Luke to forsee his friends pain at Bespin? Or Yoda and Obi-Wan sensing extinguished lives from so far away?

Right, but this seems more powerful an ability than anything else we've seen the Jedi do IMO. Without being one with the force, Yoda is watching from afar, enough to know what Luke was thinking. I guess it could be like when he senses Anakin's pain when Shmi dies, but you would think dark side activity would be easier to sense than Luke's passing thoughts.
I just found it interesting.

hidden camera may not be that far off.

obi lived nearby, checked on him from time to time.
maybe he communicated with yoda via force or even holos.
perhaps yoda did learn from qui-gon the ability of far-seeing
and communication, in turn taught it to obi.

or coded messages sent between planets.

or maybe he did visit in secret.
he could have spoken to luke and then mind tricked him into forgetting.
planting thoughts of dagobah and its location.

That's interesting. What part of TPM was this? I've only read the ROTS novelisation.

I always (and I mean way before the prequels existed) assumed Yoda was referring to Anakin with this comment. Pre-Vader Anakin. He was letting Luke know that he'd better learn to focus if he really wants to do this Jedi thing. And that Jedi training not working out can have disastrous outcomes.
Yoda seemingly talks himself out of training Luke, then reluctantly agrees with Obi Wan to proceed. Just as he did with Anakin in the Ep1. My assumption about this conversation in Ep 5 made Episode 1 a VERY important link in the saga to me, where most fans didn't care for it.
