    how long did the rebels stay at hoth as there base

    They had only just arrived, couple of months maybe, Luke and Han were still scouting the planet out.

    Yeah I'm guessing not to long either since they were still having trouble adapting the speeders to the cold.

    wouldnt that have been a waste of credits.. building the cannon, the base, the generator, computers,etc fer only being there for aa few months

    Ultimately yes, but that's war. They didn't plan on being discovered by the Empire so quickly. They no doubt planned & hoped to stay on Hoth longer.

    Murphy's Law applies: "No plan survives contact with the enemy."
