Let's see, Twilight was made for 37 million dollars, and world wide it made almost 400 million dollars. Even after half of the box office take goes to the theatre owners, that's still a very profitable movie.

Let's see, Serenity was made for 39 million dollars, and world wide it made 38 million dollars. Ouch. Half the box office take goes to the theatre owners, so it actually earned about 19 million, which means it barely earned half of what it cost to make.

Thats hardly a fair comparison and you know it. The nature of each film, its popularity, the complexity of each film's story/characters, the ability to sell each film and exposure of each film are so incredibly disproportionate. Not to mention as you state Twilight is Titanic-lite, where their box office scores are inflated by return visits by the same devoted fanbase, each time bringing a new friend to see it or dragging their poor, unsuspecting boyfriend/husband.

Sure, ET and Star Wars had enough actual goodness to get intelligent adults seeing them ON PURPOSE over and over along with the children, and that's why they are two of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

But if they were JUST good movies that appealed to intelligent adults, they wouldn't have been record-breakers.

If you want to get specific, my point was more about the inaccuracy of box office scores to determine a number of factors including the measure of a particular fanbase, given the inflation of numbers with return tickets for a film of this nature.
